There's some difference, it would be the same situation if Ward was the one who countered him, but it was the other way:

In Maidana's case, Floyd was the one throwing the lazy jab, in hope that Maidana would take a bait and throw his own jab, after which Floyd would counter it with his straight right, as he always does.

In Kovalev's case, Kovalev was in Floyd's position, only that he succesfully baited Ward. Another little difference is that he was probably expecting Ward to answer with a jab of his own and counter it, but instead he threw the right and still got countered, badly.

By the way, speaking of that technique, Floyd a boxing scholar that he is, got it from Duran. He used it as good as Duran and made it his trademark. What amazes me about Duran is that he was a master of that technique, althought he had much shorter arms and did it against the bigger opponents. Hagler fight is a great exemple. He landed it countless times on him, it was incredible.

We can ALL agree Kovalov was gassed out in the later rounds. He was falling down and falling in between the ropes clearly showing he was tired.
There were enough close rounds that there are a bunch of different ways someone's RBR scorecard could look. I'm fine with anything in that range as well.

              • Because of the KD and the 114-113 scores, Ward won 7 rounds??

I felt overall Kovalev won a close fight.

                The Perez-Hooker score was ugly.

I actually think if anything, Kovalev is an unfortunate product of the "face first brawler" mindset a lot of fans have nowadays. If people wouldn't make 1000s of post every year saying "Ward is boring. Boxing is boring. I hate runners," Kovalev would of probably gotten more appreciation for his "boxing" last night.

But, I actually think the opposite of your last sentence. I don't give Kovalev the close rounds because he's the puncher- I legitimately think he outboxed the boxer, with good boxing.

Somebody just posted that this is Calzaghe-Hopkins all over again and people will disagree on this for a decade..... I dunno about a decade- but this **** is going to be like this every day until the rematch and a "decisive victory" is achieved
I definitely don't agree that Kovalev outboxed Ward. I was impressee by Kovalev's ability to hang with Ward in terms ofthe technical boxing once Ward kinda got his legs under him. And that's what I think "won" him the fight. The fight played out pretty much how I expected. I thought Kovalev would win early and Ward would have some anxious moments. I thought Ward would adjust, and take over in the second half of the fight, which happen, kinda. I thought once Ward took over, he'd box circles around Sergey, which didn't happen. He got the better of it. But not enough to overcome the early deficit. Kovalev held his own once Ward figured him out. And I thought he did enough to win a couple rounds in the second half of the fight.

                  • Ward won, stop crying!

I scored rounds 1, 2, 4, 6 and 10 for Kovalev and came up with the same score as the three judges.

This fight was close - some would even say controversial, but this was NOT a robbery.

If I were Ward, I'd take a page out of the Money Mayweather playbook and start taking on the villian role with how he's receiving so much hate for this fight. I'd make millions off these haters. Wanna talk crap? Start watching all my PPV's from here on out to hope that I lose one day while I count your money in my pocket.

                    • Silliness

If you didn't watch the fight and watched the next day compu box stats it looks like Ward won. Having watched the fight twice, it was close. But the body punches that Ward was landing from the clinch count.

I think we are judging off of hits to the head. Ward did alot of work inside of Kovalev power range. Wrapping a right arm while punching the body with the free arm.
