Comments Thread For: Groves Concerned With Gutknecht's Condition After Collapse

BOXING champ George Groves has sent his support to opponent Eduard Gutknecht after he was rushed to hospital when he collapsed in his changing room. The 34-year-old German fell ill just minutes after the Brit scored a unanimous point win to defend his super-middleweight title in London last night.

Fight should've been stopped after 8 or 9 rounds.

Agreed, though there wasn't really a point where Groves was bombarding him with shots so I can kind of see why it wasn't stopped. Groves was landing heavy shots though with not much coming back, sometimes having a granite chin is a bad thing as a lot of fighters would have been dropped and out instead of taking a sustained beating. Gutknecht's corner should have pulled him out by round 10 at the latest.

That's why Amir Khan will walk away from boxing 100% healthy, he only ever takes one big shot per fight.

The fight had that depressing Nick Blackwell-esque feeling when Gutknecht kept getting pummelled from corner to corner. :conf3:

Well done Terry O'Connor. Yet another entry of shame on his record. Everyone could see this fight should've been stopped around frame 9 or 10, yet he lets the guy take another 100 or so power shots. I'm still not convinced about Groves, though, I feel he's always going to be just shy of world title holder level - unless he gets a gimme - but nevertheless he's still going to be a tough fight for anyone at 168.

Maybe boxing needs to stop putting mediocre guys in there with high level guys . Maybe refs should stop one sided beatings sooner.

yeah mismatches need to stop being sanctioned. if there's no competitive element, no real question of who will win, it's no longer a sport. there should be stricter guidelines for match-making. perhaps ranked contenders should only be allowed to face other ranked contenders

Bad refereeing comes in part with from the kind of fans who feel cheated if a guy isn't smashed into the ground,or think that a fighter is a coward if he doesn't have his brains turned to mush.Sometime we all forget were watching human beings in there.

Surely a portion of the blame needs to go to his corner?
There didn't really seem like a perfect opportunity for the ref to stop it but why his corner kept sending him out after round 9 when he was taking a pasting and not throwing anything back.
