Bad refereeing comes in part with from the kind of fans who feel cheated if a guy isn't smashed into the ground,or think that a fighter is a coward if he doesn't have his brains turned to mush.Sometime we all forget were watching human beings in there.

terry o'connor is not typically a ref who allows beatdowns to go on and hasn't really shown any shyness in the past about making decisions the fans wouldn't like. it was just an oversight. as others have pointed out, there was never one clear moment in which the fight could have been stopped and i think the onus has to be on the corner to withdraw their man in between rounds in cases like this. however o'connor probably should've had a doctor look at gutknecht's eye, which could have allowed the doctor to notice something was up or given gutknecht the opportunity to quit with his pride intact

I agree the main responsibility lies with the corner ,remember how hard some of the fans and so called experts experts came down on the Ingles over pulling out Kell Brook.I just think refs have the idea in the back of their mind the kind of backlash that occurs when they stop a fighter that might look more able from outside the ropes than they are.Even when you spar ,sometimes you see a guys eyes roll and you back off before anyone outside sees what's happening.

I always think and it's probably not a popular opinion but the moment a fighters eye completely closes then the fight has to be done - you need to physically pull eye lids apart in these cases and if you still can't get at it - stop the fight. I've never seen doctor at a fight do this before as in physically try and open then eye probably for fear of causing trauma but that should be a sign too.

Because if you can't see if both pupils are equal and reacting to light you can't really make a proper assessment about an increase in intracranial pressure. I've seen those doctors shine a light into one eye before.

I love boxing but I'd stop a hell of fights even with my very basic neurological observations knowledge.

There needs to be some kind of ruling for this. If you getting obviously beaten on the cards and are taking big shots with no comeback looking likely at all, the ref should come in and stop it.

I hate how a lot of TKO's = you have to hit them fast and clean 8 times in a row. There's nothing wrong with stopping it after just one big shot.

Surely a portion of the blame needs to go to his corner?
There didn't really seem like a perfect opportunity for the ref to stop it but why his corner kept sending him out after round 9 when he was taking a pasting and not throwing anything back.

Yes you're right, his corner have got to shoulder blame too. I was just getting a little too focused on Terry O'Connor. Lawrence Cole is the American version of Terry O'Connor. Both bad refs and corrupt as hell.
