Saying boxing needs more Andre Ward's is too specific to Ward and throws off the point. Boxing needs more special talents in general. Personality aside, they have to be able to fight, which is what Ward does best. Outside of his skill level I wouldn't say there's anything about Andre Ward that boxing NEEDS. If the author's suggesting that we need more boxers who just show up and fight, there are plenty of those, but are they worth watching if they don't have the skill to compete?

The same way boxing needs a mix of styles, it also needs a mix of personalities. Without the Broner's of the world, we wouldn't appreciate the subdued athletes of the world. If 100% of the athletes were reserved it would be less interesting. Look at how many articles were made on Mayweather just this week. I think we all need to be honest and not pretend the buffoonery is never entertaining. You mean to tell me you're just as interested in Thurman vs Garcia with no trash talk from either fighter or Angel Garcia.

The reason we're able to look at Ward as a breath of fresh air is because he's an extremely skilled, humble, black fighter. Too many of those and Ward becomes ordinary.

Agree with most of your post except the bolded. Most hardcore fans can respect his skills but he is not a boxer most casuals are going to warm too. What boxing needs is a mix up of styles as it currently has now but ... more than anything boxing needs more activity. So many boxers are throwing away potential greatness by being inactive too much in their primes - Rigo, Andrade, Eubank, Mikey garcia

I don't mean his style so much as his personality and confidence to take risks. That's what boxing needs more of, fighters like Ward (and Kovalev) who have real pride and confidence that drives them to prove themselves against the best. Ward could have done what seemingly 90% of the best fighters today do, and make dozens of excuses to not fight Kovalev while making 2 million against bums. Kovalev was his best option though, and he has the confidence he will win, so he took it.

There could be half a dozen Andre Wards out there who just don't take the risks to prove it. And that's a real shame. They could all respond in big ways to real, consistent competition just like Ward did. Garcia's a great example of that. He came to fame because he fought a very solid run of opponents and proved himself. He fell off when he stopped testing himself.

There may be no difference between Andre Ward and numerous other fighters besides a willingness to fight the best. Which is why boxing has declined so much.

I have to disagree with this article. Boxing doesn't need men who won't take tough fights unless they are paid way above market level for doing it.

What boxing needs is more champions like Kovalev, who will defend his title against anybody without demanding more money than the income from the fight justifies.

Remember, HBO pulled the plug on him and they only allowed him back on condition he agreed to fight Krusher.

Not even Roc would have allowed Andre to keep fighting Paul Smiths on BET for the money they were paying him!

Whether you like it or not, boxing is all about the money, not fighting guys you want them to fight. Its all about being financially stable.
