And I can see your point. A fighters appearance has no bearing on the outcome of a fight. Arturo Gatti by appearance lost all his fights. I have personally met and spoke frequently with Meldrick Taylor in San Diego where he lives. The stoppage hurt to him more than Chavez fists. I would agree with you if it was a Corrales/Castillo round where Taylor was getting pounded on with 2 seconds left but it wasn't. Taylor wasn't unresponsive, he was distracted by his corner. Even Richard Steele's career was virtually over after that fight. It remains a blemish on his career as it should.

That's a very weak excuse, I'm won't even try to counter it. He was seriously beaten up. He was even lying in the post fight interview that he answered the referee when he asked him if he's ok, while it's clear that he didn't.

It's pretty simple. Taylor was winning the battle but lost the war. He was an utter mess after the fight and never truly the fighter he was before it again. And you can claim his corner distracted him, but that is not Chavez's nor Steele's fault. If Taylor had all his marbles at that point he would not have been distracted. And considering Steele reffed fights up until 2007 I would hardly say that fight "virtually" ended his career.

Did I mention I was rooting for Taylor that fight while watching in Mexico while on spring break?

Forget post fight interview and whether he was lying for a second. Forget what he looked like after the fight. At the time he went down, look at him get up and stare at his corner. It's not my excuse, it happened. It's in their documentary, far from an excuse. Richard Steele F'd up by stopping it with 2 seconds left when Meldrick Taylor was winning unanimously on all 3 cards. Every single fighter who's gotten stopped or lost a close fight always add a little mustard to their interview. Doesn't make them liars, they just don't see what the judges or the public see. If you don't agree that it was a bad call, then you probably think Chavez beat Pernell Whitaker also. Both fights were classic WBC Jose Sulaiman corruption at its finest.
