Comments Thread For: Kovalev: Chilemba Was Like a Test For My Fight With Andre Ward

Sergey Kovalev - "I was very excited to be fighting in my home town and very happy because for a long time I didn't fight there. The most important thing for me was that I fought there as a world champion and I defended my titles. There was little bit more pressure when I fought there because I had more responsibility, I had my family, my friends and everybody who knows me in Russia to take care of. I did not want to let everyone down, but I think I gave good fight and all fans enjoy it.

He didn't fail the "test" but he'll require better than a C plus to beat Ward. Ward brings an A Game to each venture. He's too tough and intrinsically talented to bet against.

You silly, if that's his game plan to come in dropping bombs early, he loses.

He should have been able to do that to 50 y/o B-Pops.

Yeah, the Chilemba fight was a good idea to get a feel for a more Ward-like fighter. Same with the BHop fight. Part of me thinks that Ward should have went after a tune-up opponent that was more of Kov's style, but if Ward doesn't think it's an issue, then there are no excuses. Ward seems like a very systematic and clean guy the way he goes about boxing. He's super ring smart, so he may have been doing this for so long that it doesn't matter what the opponent style is. I think his savvy results in problems for the Krusher. This is a good one regardless. We're so close....

Yeah, but we all know B-Pops ain't normal. He took a massive right hand (in the 11th if I remember right) that buckled his knees and made him go diagonal. That shot would have knocked anyone else down if not out.

I can't wait for this fight.
