We don't know what the guaranteed purses are but I imagine they are quite high and the promoters may take a loss regardless.

Roc Nation has no idea what they are doing and Main Events just doesn't have a lot of money, but I do think they are trying to promote it, along with HBO.

However, even if they spent an extra 1M on promotion, I don't think it would yield 1M in extra ppv revenue. There is a cap on how successful a boxing ppv can be among two guys who aren't crossover stars.

I say we just try to enjoy this one and not worry about the economics.

Has it? I seen Andre Ward do a interview about it during the Warriors vs Thunder Basketball Game that is the only thing I've seen but NO I don't know a Casual who is talking about that fight at all. People are pumped up for UFC 205 this weekend though!

This writer is wack. Clooney never beat a quality fighter in thier prime. He had a big punchers chance from one hand. And every real fan knew Floyd still was razor sharp and PAC since religion and lack of vitamins was a few years off of prime. Kovalev approaching prime Ward at end of his needed more tuneups or gym fights with top guys.

Huh? He's talking about his perception of Cooney (or "Clooney") from when he was a little kid.
He also said he believed Floyd would have beat Pac at any time.

Anyway, charming article. I like the occasional candor and nostalgia from a veteran writer.

            What spike?

The only fight I see anything about right now is the UFC card...and a little Mayweather/Pacquiao II stuff.

It sucks that there isn't more excitement about this. This is an amazing fight that should be mainstream sports news. I haven't been this excited about a fight in a while.

Two top 5 p4p fighters, both prime, both great examples of everything good about boxing, a very interesting clash of styles. I love everything about it.

and this is the most attention you have gotten since you started making up stories about Alfonso Gomez

The fact that the one of the most intriguing fights in the last 5 years will get MAYBE 250,000 ppv buys bums me out. But that being said, ward by tough close decision.

I can't wait to see this fight. This and Loma vs. Walters are both in the top 5 match ups of this year.

                    I'm taking Ward by decision.

                    This thread is depressing me.

American boxing needs a charismatic promoter, like a Dana White or an Eddie Hearn ... somebody who knows how to publicise an event, likes talking to the media, and draws people in with his own enthusiasm and passion for the sport he's trying to sell.

                      EXCELLENT POINT!

Boxing was at it best and was making a TON OF MONEY when Corrupt Don King was the Top Promoter, he had the ability to rally casuals yes I do think boxing misses that. Fighters basically have to Promote Themselves and that sucks for guys who don't speak English. Don King was able to market Chavez Sr and Trinidad with no problem despite them not speaking English because of his Personality. No question having that type of Promoter would certainly help the sport!
