Jim Brown, Babe Ruth, Jim Thorpe.

Hard to tell because boxing is completely different from most other sports. Athleticism just isn't enough.

I know what your saying RWK but you have to admit, that the law of averages says that out of all the great athletes with HW size in the NFL and NBA that there is bound to be a couple that if they had chosen to box instead of play there respective sport that they would've been HW contenders if not champions.

European countries more popular sports dont eat up there BIG athletes the way American sports does..... i.e. soccer, cricket. If your big and athletic there is a higher chance in Europe for you to get into boxing.

I personally think football Safeties, Linebackers, RB's and DE's are all big enough to compete. Most all RB's are atleast 215lbs and many more are coming in at 240lbs+ and thats with speed, safeties are 225lbs on average and DE's LB's come in around 245-280 with speed. The thing about football players is that theyre conditioning for football is not that well suited for boxing. NBA Forwards and Center could translate into good boxers, i.e. Ben Wallace and Shaq there both huge but not frankestien slow, Shaq was actually really quick and explosive under the basket in addition to his just monstrous size.

Sounds like some of you are basing someone's ability as a heavyweight on their bench pressing ability alone... For all you know Bo Jackson could have been feather fisted. Tons of failed heavyweights might have made great football players.

Bo fought when he was younger, never lost.
The bench press was just to show his natural strength; remember, the guy didn't like to lift weights and was heavily muscled simply because he had great genetics.

You also have to remember that he was a Full-Back/Running-Back...these guys take hits and give hits for a living.

His ability to run is partially due to his ability to move his arms quick, so that at least may give him the ability to throw fast punches...add that to his strength, chances are he could probably punch.

He could also throw a baseball hard and hit far.

Bo called himself the "Gotti" of his neighborhood

Well, good post....but like I've stated that's all good.

But fighting requires a mental toughness that extends far beyond the kind you need on a "Football" field. Sure those guys get hit by some monsters...but they're wearing helmets, and play in a team setting.

A fighter doesn't wear a helmet, and only has himself to rely on when it comes to the game. Sure some of these guys are "athletic" enough to "box"....but that doesn't mean they can win big fights....or be champs without encountering some sort of adversity.

Oh and you could find the most athletic ballerina and teach him Pernell Whittaker's style.....but that doesn't mean they wouldn't fold when they get hit.

I also don't think you can tell who could be a fighter....based on physical characteristics....in fact that's always wrong. Case and Point: Do Joe C, DLH, and Felix Trinidad look like atheletic specimen?

I do realize we're discussing heavyweights....but then again Sergei Liakahovic, Hasim Rahman, and Nicolai Valuev aren't anywhere near an athletic scale. They're the anti-athletic

            That's just my 2 cents.

Do people not like to read my post? I made my comment on the first page about how NFL players traditionally have been bad boxers and how NBA players are better suited to adapt to boxing

                  I feel.....ignored.

                    NBA players?

These guy lack the mental toughness...watch a game, they get touched and they fall to the floor or yell "Foul"

not to mention they usually have smaller heads, thin necks, lighter frames despite their weight, etc.
That is why I say, pound for pound, if you shrink them down to a guy that is about 6'1, how much would they weigh?

Shaq is really one of the few really big, thick, big guys.

I know exactly what your saying, and I'm not saying that NFL/NBA athletecisim translates directly into Boxing success. What I'm saying is that out of the thousands of athletes with HW SIZE that play in college or pro football or basketball that there was/is bound to be a couple of them with good chins and power and that could've been HW contenders or champions if there wasn't any NFL or NBA and they had all entered boxing instead.

However we will never know because there chins wont be tested in the NFL. I also see your point with DLH or Trinidad and there physiques. If I didn't know who the hell Trinidad was and saw him in a bar or something I would probably think, "Hey I can kick his butt". Same with Juan Diaz I mean that kid definitely looks like a regular college student with no real prominent six pack or muscles.
