If Canelo got good clear wins over the top guys of 160, 168, and maybe 175 I would consider him an atg. If he loses to GGG then it is out of the question. Honestly I don't think GGG can win this one. He's 35 and not even close to Jersey Joe Walcott in terms of skill. Clearly on the downside of his career.

Edit: Btw I doubt that Canelo even gets passed 160.

What gets remembered is the resume, very rarely do negotiations get remembered. If Jacobs and GGG don't fight then 20 years from now younger fans will look back and say "hey wait, why didn't they fight?" most likely not remembering that they couldn't reach an agreement.

Very little fans remember that Dempsey was in negotiations with Harry Wills and that fight was almost made.
Golovkin wiped out some of the bigger names of the previous generation of middleweights in Macklin, Geale, and Murray. He beat 2 or 3 other top 10 middleweights as well. These are fighters that a revered top p4per in Sergio Martinez struggled to beat, and Golovkin obliterated them easily.

What we're seeing now is the next generation of middleweights replacing those Golovkin already beat. He hasn't fought any of them yet because they just got there and they're not yet willing to risk getting beat up like the others.

Golovkin isn't the best middleweight in theory, he proved it in the ring against other top middleweights. Now the new top middleweights are supposed to come in and challenge Golovkin's claim.

Macklin wasn't even top 10 when GGG fought him and Martin Murray was ranked 5th. That is not impressive considering atg's fought the number 1 contender and rarely the number 2. The fact that contenders are refusing to fight GGG is a statement on to itself that fighters today aren't even close to the level of greatness of just 30 years ago. Wasn't so long ago that fighters would kill for a title shot.

Also, Martinez didn't fight Geale and was past prime when he fought Macklin and Murray. Golovkin is the best middleweight of the last 5 or 6 years but not of all time. He rarely fights other top middleweights.

I agree with the title on the thread, but a fighter can be an atg with a good run in one division, Hagler, Monzon, Williams, the heavies...
In the other side, Canelo has the body to move to higher divisions, but i doubt he will considering his height.
