He isn't yet.
Canelo can't be an ATG

What will beating GGG will mean Historicaly ?ppl and analists will look back on GGG resume and say "wait why is this win so good?"If he moved up and beat Golovkin before Golovkin becomes shot, that would go a long way in making him an ATG. The competition is definitely there for Alvarez to become an ATG just at 154 and 160.
The bigger obstacle preventing it is that he likely isn't good enough.Comment

Golovkin is far and away the best middleweight on the planet and has been for years now. The names are not great but he has still dominated his division in a manner few others today can claim to. There may not be any champ today that rules their division the way Golovkin does. That would be a great win for Alvarez and a huge step towards establishing himself as an ATG.
The only people who would discredit that win are haters that shouldn't be taken seriously anyway. It would be the biggest win of Alvarez's career by a large margin.Comment

Canelo has only lost to Mayweather just like everybody else lost to Mayweather. Canelo is only 26 and improves and learns with every fight. He has an iron jaw and he is one of the best body punchers in the sport. Mayweather thinks Canelo is great and he should know. You don't think he can be an all time great and maybe you are right. I think he does have the potential to be an all time great and he looked excellent to me in his win over Smith.Comment

James Toney made it all the way to heavyweight at a generous 5"9 and he's very similar to Canelo style wise. He is also without a doubt an atg.Comment

Golovkin dominated a division through fear not by direct actions. That is not the same as Hagler cleaning out the middleweight division or Joe Louis cleaning out the heavyweight division.Golovkin is far and away the best middleweight on the planet and has been for years now. What gets remembered is the resume, very rarely do negotiations get remembered. If Jacobs and GGG don't fight then 20 years from now younger fans will look back and say "hey wait, why didn't they fight?" most likely not remembering that they couldn't reach an agreement.
Very little fans remember that Dempsey was in negotiations with Harry Wills and that fight was almost made.Comment
