There were several articles here, and at other boxing sites, which stated that both Cotto and Canelo had to sign a contract agreeing that the winner of their fight would fight GGG next as a condition of him stepping aside from his mando shot at Cotto.

Same thing with when GGG stepped aside again to allow Canelo to fight Khan, though no step-aside fee was paid that time. Sulaiman stated that both Canelo and Khan were obligated to fight GGG next if they won, or be stripped of the title.

If Canelo hadn't told GGG he was going to fight him next, what would have been the point of Golovkin stepping aside for the second time, when he wasn't paid a dime for doing it?

Whether Canelo paid GGG to step aside is irrelevant and it's not what this thread is about.

The point is that Canelo pledged to fight GGG next if he beat Cotto, and then he made another pledge to fight GGG next if Golovkin gave him permission to have a voluntary defence first.

Canelo made the first of those broken promises just before GGG got the offer from Ward, and that was the main reason why Loeffler rejected it.
