Garcia is a decent boxer but his right hand is not that great and it was even worse back then, to counter a jab you need to bring the right hand over the top and Garcia is really a left hook guy so Herrera really never let him get to work with that punch because he jabbed and moved the correct way.

It is really a fight that showed Garcia's limitation because without a good right hand it is impossible to box a guy in for a left hook to land on a guy that is actively trying to avoid left hooks. Since then he has done much better work with the right hand but still that weak right hand will cost him sooner than later at 147.
Great post, this is the same exact way I saw that fight. He out jabbed Danny that's a fact but that's all he did. Danny was the one throwing combinations all night. It was a good fight but you cant win a belt just out jabbing the champ. Herrera went on to loose a few similar fights after that so......

He under performed against Peterson as well. Peterson screwed himself by running the first half of the fight and he gave Garcia a gift that the judges didn't have to.

Herrera has a good chin, was not intimidated and smothered Danny a lot.

Also Herrera kept his head low but head butted a lot in that fight.

It this site body punches don't count which Danny was doing during the whole fight.

Watching the Peterson fight it looks like Danny didn't apply the lesson that he learned from the Herrera fight

              I chuckled myself.

Fellaz I distinctly recall the circus surrounding the Herrera fight. Garcia always wanted to fight in Puerto Rico hereinafter pr. And got it. Pr wanted a new hero as well. The lead up was sickening however. The week or so before the fight Garcia was all over the island doing news and radio interviews and documentaries. He was a major curiosity on the island. And Garcia and his handlers ahem haymon, obliged them becuase they wanted to grow his fan base there. So this is what he was doing instead of focusing on the fight.

Come fight night the hype was real. Everyone was anxious to see the Rican from philly fight for the first time in pr. Danny even came out with Daddy Yankee. daddy Yankee is the preeminent reggeatonero not only locally but world wide. Danny had to live up to the hype of this fight and needed to put on a show. You could see the pressure on Danny's face during the ring walk. He was not himself.

His mind was focused on putting on a good show instead of focusing on the fight in hand. Bell rang and Danny's face told it all. He looked stressed. Not worried but stressed. Danny is usually relaxed and got this cool dude attitude during a ring walk and is focused in the ring. Rewatch the fight and focus on his demeanor.

His lack of focus caused him to win a close decision rather than the expected spectacular win ala matessye. He let the hype get to him and he underperformed. that is all. If that fight happened in philly or New York or anywhere in the states it would have been a run of the mill fight in which Danny would have dominated. In a rematch Danny folds him. Pretty much end of story.

Canelo used the same strategy against cotto. Save your energy first half of fight and come on strong the second half of the fight. Peterson and Canelo did that to be able to last the full 12 rounds without getting folded. That strategy worked only Canelo got the win (judging by the scores it was destined).

Peterson lost a close decision. The loss was fair n square. There are 12 wounds to a fight not 6 not 9. The musta forgot the Oscar strategy vs Tito is rightfully disfavored both conceptually and per the rules of boxing. It's point based not who looks the best during most of the fight.

Danny couldn't handle Herrera's great jab and inside skills, two things Danny himself lacks. It was a bad style match up for him, Danny's bread and butter is counter-punching, catching opponents as they're coming in, so against crafty/slippery fighters like Herrera, Danny is always going to struggle.

If Danny had a good jab, he could've stopped Herrera from getting inside, or if he had a decent inside game, he could at least have held his own.

I had the fight 8-4 for Herrera, I thought it was a pretty easy fight to score.
