the sergi fight is the most he could make. HBO would not sign him and pay him the big money for tuneups. he HAD to fight sergi otherwise no deal only a ward jock sniffer does not know that

1) A "cash grab" is not taking a fight that is leagues more difficult than anything else you could be doing, for marginally more pay. Cash grabbing is fighting easier guys with big fanbases. Kov fighting Pascal for the 2nd time was a cash grab (not bashing Kov, just educating you on the terminology).

2) Ward could have easily gone with other options but chose HBO and specifically said he wanted to fight Kovalev when he did it. Show/PBC would have really set him fat with plenty of easy fights at 175 and an eventual Stevenson showdown in a couple years. Easy fights, good money. But, he wanted to go to the top. Took 1 year to acclimate to the weight class and is fighting the best in a month.
