Kovalev. But Froch was the beginning.

      Skill? Athleticism? Power?

If you want to kid yourself into thinking Froch is better than Kovalev go ahead. Ward isn't even that same fighter he was back then anyway.. He looks rusty!

Comparing Froch to Kovalev is like comparing MW Arthur Abraham to a Sergio Martinez with more power & a better chin IMO Kovalev has more dimensions to his game. He's not a Pavlik, Froch or an Abraham no matter how much certain factions pretend he is. Yes he looked a little auto pilot & lackadaisical last time out but i suspect that's down to being a tad unmotivated for Chilemba.

Froch was a great champion who had a will to win but on many occasions he came from behind to do so (Taylor, Groves, Dirrell) & he lost to Kessler which i cannot see Kovalev doing in any way shape or form.

At their respective weight divisions Kovalev > Froch..
But Ward won against Froch & is yet to fight Kovalev, its premature to make choices at this point..

          This

Froch looked vulnerable in alot of his fights.

          Kovalev barely loses rounds.

Definitely Kovalev.... He's the stiffer challenge and is more highly regarded now than Froch was, plus he's simply better.

Froch was a great fighter but never elite. Kovalev is elite.
Dirrell beat Golovkin in the amateurs too.

He's bigger of course he campaigns @ 175. Surely a win over Pascal in 2008 is better than a win in 2016?.
Kov is IMO a legitimate top 3 p4p boxer. While not the lineal LHW champion he has amssed the most impressive string of wins at LHW IMO. Froch, while it was a great win, IMO is a level below Kov-he was a top 10-12 p4p fighter andthe concensus 2nd best 168lber when Ward beat him.

That's not a tough one yet, it's Froch

One guy has the far better resume, the other guy is seemingly more dangerous and at a higher weight class but with a limited resume in comparison (but still a good one)

Froch beat Kessler, Bute, Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell*, Abraham, faded Johnson, Groves 2x, and a faded Reid. Lost to Ward and Kessler

Kovalev beat Hopkins, Pascal 2x, Cleverly, Chilemba, Sillakh, and a faded Campillo. Hasn't suffered any losses yet

Unless Kovalev goes on to recuperate big time if he loses to Ward, like beating the rest of the LHW division (Alvarez, Braehmer, Beterbiev, Shabranskyy), Froch ends up being better against better opposition and right now Froch is better, using facts (where the fighters were in their careers when Froch beat them) and resume, Froch is better

It's not just about resume. That's just a default mechanism for lazy thinkers! Kovalev is far more formidable.. I wouldn't necessarily see Hatton being a better win/opponent for Mayweather over say a Sergio Martinez had he chose to go on & fight him at MW/LMW! Think about that, don't dismiss it..
