The winner of Cotto/Canelo was one of the fights GGG had targeted for this summer when he turned down Ward's offer. He didn't know back then that Canelo was going to hand in the WBC title and run instead of fighting him.

Also, GGG will earn maybe 10x more for fighting Canelo than Ward. It's worth waiting for a payday as big as that. And he won't have to move up a division for it. He can just carry on with his career at MW and see what happens.

The answer to that question is yes, he did say he would fight Golovkin next. In fact, on more than one occasion. Under the original agreement, Canelo and Golovkin should have already fought. But Canelo went crying to the WBC wanting a voluntary, under the presumption that he was acclimating to 160. Instead he brought up Khan. Then he stood in the ring on live PPV TV and told Golovkin and the world that he would fight right now. Not 16 months from now. Right now. That is a fact as well.
