What is the deal with offering fights a year away?

I don't really understand the point of these. I've also not heard of it before Ward allegedly tried it with Golovkin. It seems to have worked with Ward/Kovalev so maybe my bull**** alarm is over sensitive.

Surely too much can happen over a year to make them legally enforceable. Say GGG lost to Jacobs next. No belts and a tarnished legacy does he still get the eight figure purse?

They just don't seem to be genuine.

Are there other examples of these contracts being made successfully?

I don't get it either. It gives each fighter an excuse to fight weak opponents in the interim.

I don't even get why Ward needs multiple tuneup fights before taking on top fighters in the upper division. Also, self-imposed inactivity can't be someone else's fault. It's his. And on a side note, I saw Kovalev and Ward together and was a bit surprised to see they have the same size.

Pacquiao vs Morales. Morales lost to Raheem but had a deal with Pac and still fought anyway

Sound like a hater on your post. Ward this. Ward that.

The facts are plenty of fights have been signed with interim fights in between.

        De la hoya vs hopkins
        Mayweather vs judah
        Morales vs pacquiao 2
        Hopkins vs jones jr 2

        Just to name a few.

In a couple of those examples a fighter lost the tune up.

there is nothing new in boxing

Don't cheat here... ! Morales lost to Raheem at 135 (lightweight), and he fought Many at super featherweight (130), tbh... Three times...

Interim fights are one thing, tune ups another. But what is the deal with a whole year? Obviously Canelo is now injured so it doesn't really matter but the offer was made well before the fight.

None of the fights you mention were negotiated a year out.

            I really don't get it.

Some of those tune-ups are 3-4 months before the fights...hardly the same as a year.

ward's not confident in beating ggg and kovalev and thats why he did it. he might beat them but he might not. it was the only way for him to secure all that money from hbo before takign a risk.

He'd been inactive for two years. Would a couple of tune up fights at 160 helped Brook before taking on GGG?

thats not even true he had just fought paul smith when he made the offer. why did he need 2 more tuneups? he didnt. and why did they have to be on hbo for big money? they didn't. he could have taken 2 quick tune ups off tv and been ready in a couple months but he wanted that money. dont get it twisted. if brook could have made 3 times more doing that he would but he wasnt allowed to do that thankfully.
