2016 Rio Olympics was one of the worst in Russian boxing history. The Russian team managed to win just one gold (Evgueny Tischenko), one silver (Mischa Aloyan) and two bronze (Vitaliy Dunaytsev and Vladimir Nikitin) medals.

Roman Romanchuk was arrested by police in Vladivostok, Russia on July 28, 2008, after shooting a man in the eye during a drunken fight. He was convicted of 'murder committed with excessive force in self-defense' and sentenced to 1 year and 6 months of imprisonment, on March 27, 2009. According to the judge, the victim, a 22-year-old Oleg Meshkov, attacked Romanchuk, but Romanchuk went beyond self-defense when he took an Osa non-lethal pistol from Meshkov, shot him in the face and punched and kicked him in the head.

His boxing career was over after this incident, but before it was very successful - he won silver medals on the World and European championships, beat some of the best amateurs of that period of time, like Luis Ortiz and future Olympic champions Odlanier Solis & Roberto Cammarelle.

Romanchuk, who was born in Ukraine, returned to his home country few years ago and spent there last years of his life.

            RIP Romanchuk.

The russians did worse than expected but it was still better than in 2012 where their male team only won only 1 gold and 3 bronze. Also in 1996 they got 1 gold and 3 bronze so it´s a bit exaggerated to state it was "one of the worst in russian boxing history".

I don't get this article....how was this a bad olympics for russians? I didn't know they they were apparently winning medals by by the boat loads....

Also they are loosing the silver from rio since they found doping.

37 is way too young to be dropping dead of a heart attack. He likely had some sort of underlying health condition.
