Canelo Alvarez got the duke tonight over Erislandy Lara, but there's some controversy, as is often the case, though at least this time, it appeared there was a solid argument for either man to win. Official scores were 115-113 and 117-111 for Canelo, and 115-113 for Lara. BLH had it 115-113 for Lara, while Showtime's Steve Farhood had 115-113 for Lara, as well.

The fight saw several rounds that could have been called swing rounds, as I personally had at least five rounds of the 12 that I felt could have gone either way. I shaded toward Lara, who landed some crisp shots, but absolutely did "run" for much of the fight, while Canelo landed a lot of solid body shots along the way.

The scores are going to be debated, the winner will be debated. Canelo Alvarez took a split decision win over Erislandy Lara tonight on Showtime PPV.

Lara would easily beat Cotto, and Cotto knows that! The money fights are Cotto and Canelo, that's why GGG is still @ 160. But if Brook wants the best @ 154, then he goes PBC!
I watched Canelo vs Lara myself, so I don't need telling how to score it by anybody else. It was a shit fight, but Canelo deserved to get the nod. Lara was absolute garbage, running away the whole time while throwing little flicks at Canelo's gloves.

Lara is nothing special and the other Haymon SWW's are still scared of fighting him. That should tell you how good they are ... B level, at best.

Kell Brook is who he is! He got his face broken and suddenly he's a beast?

          August 17, 2014:

It was a tough night for Porter, 26, whose aggression wasn't effective, as he lunged constantly, missed a ton of shots, and got picked off with jabs and counter shots from Brook. That's not to say it was a truly sterling performance for Brook, either, as the fight certainly lacked grace. Aside from counter shots, and maybe even more than those, Brook's strongest asset in this fight was his ability to smother Porter, often clinching him when he'd get in close. To Brook's credit, it worked and was smart. And Porter, it seemed, let himself simply get too far inside -- a half-step back, and his work might have wound up tidier, even if Brook did intend to hold.

That's his most impressive win, and he followed that up with Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin and Kevin Bizier. Please stop! He should fight Cotto. Cotto is trying to fight Marquez, Gamboa, and Lamont Peterson. Brook should be an excellent choice for Cotto!

Not true. Bone density can vary from person to person, and overinflated muscles doesn't mean more power. I myself am a very heavy person. I weight about 190 pounds, am lean and fairly muscular, but still, some of the guys at the gym that I go to walk around at a 160 pounds and look way bigger than me. My bone structure is fairly big (you can see it in my wrists, shoulders, ankles). I could still go down to 160 (if I loose some fat and muscle) and I would still be bigger than those guys, not heavier but bigger.

An orbital bone can be broken inside a ring, it has happen before. But..... In just two rounds? Man you have to admit that GGG must be ridiculously powerful to be able to do that in that short amount of time.

Kell looked more like a Calvin Klein model than a boxer. He did well though. At least better that I was expecting.

                  Brook had nothing to lose

We already knew this, thus he took this fight

Hearn knew this as well thats why he made this fight happen

Ingle saved the kid from career ending damage by throwing in the towel.

Although some serious damage was done to Brook, having your face broken is no joke and i don't think Brook will ever be the same after that brutal 5 round beating he took

I still have my doubts we will see Brook back in the ring and if we do it will be towards the end of 2017....

HBO asked Hearn about matching Brook and Cotto earlier this year. Hearn agreed to it but Cotto's team didn't.

“HBO have approached us regarding the possibility of fighting Miguel Cotto on June 18 in New York, which we would jump at. But I think Cotto and his team are looking for someone easier on June 18."
