Comments Thread For: Brook should emulate Duran, not Leonard to upset Golovkin

Does anyone expect that Brook can actually win a fight in the trenches, where he will need to take considerable punishment to stick around? Call the size difference overblown if you want but Brook has never taken a punch like Golovkin has. Few fighters in the sport compare. It is that power (and obviously the skill behind it) that makes this such a mismatch in the eyes of the boxing world and public. How can you expect a welterweight to move up 2 divisions and be able to take arguably the hardest p4p punch in the sport?
A gameplan that walks Brook right into that power doesn't sound very smart. Brook has to hope he has the considerable skill advantage needed to time Golovkin, avoid his punches, and tie him. It's very unlikely.Comment

All you cats criticizing the article and the strategy are jokes. It's spot on as is Johnny_Roa.
Watch every single Golovkin fight including the one where he was getting dusted before the knockdown. He is not an in fighter. Fighting in the pocket nullifies power and for a fighter who isn't defensively sound, can result in a lot of body damage. Golovkin has to setup and measure you. His precision comes from that set up. Take that away and it's Crawford/Postol all over again.
Remember Roger Mayweather? That dude fought better in the pocket than he did at distance. It was straight poetry watching him check opponents left and right.
I've said for months that the way to beat Golovkin is to not let him bully you around the ring. Keep it in the center, go toe-to-toe and don't let him set up. If he backs you up to the ropes, you've already lost.
That's why I'm concerned about Brook because he has a tendency to fight on the back foot. I don't know that he can fight in the pocket.Comment

Quote, "Golovkin might have superior boxing skills and versatility but he has never been dragged into prolonged, frenetic trench warfare."
Well, you should watch GGG vs Kassim Ouma where both punished each other from Round 1 to the late rounds, non-stop. That's what is called warfare.Comment

A fight in the trenches is not the key to victory for Brook. The keys would be to box slickly like a Whitaker, Leonard, Mayweather or a prime Hopkins or Roy Jones in order to win. I don't think Brook has those skills, but I haven't see that much of him. Tonight we will see.Comment
