Comments Thread For: Chocolatito Goes for Four: How Does His Pursuit Weigh Up?

By Cliff Rold - This Saturday night on HBO (10 PM EST/PST), lineal flyweight king Roman Gonzalez (45-0, 38 KO) moves into his fourth professional weight class to challenge undefeated WBC super flyweight titlist Carlos Cuadras (35-0-1, 27 KO). It looks like a hell of a fight on paper between a pair of men still in their 20s. Should Gonzalez win, he'll become the seventeenth fighter to win titles in that many classes (sans interim titles that were never elevated a la Robert Guerrero) and the first from his native Nicaragua...

So Gonzalez overtakes Andre Ward in successfully adding weight ( provided Chocolatito wins this Saturday vs. Cuadras) ....this results in a 9.523809523809524 increase in weight for Roman from 105-115 and for Ward from 160-175 = 9.375 and BTW I'm assuming Ward beats Kovalev otherwise that nullifies the results.

Note: the article rendered a 16% increase for Hearns now I might be mistaken but I got it at 19% from 147-175.

finally gotta agree with you diabetesali.

He simply beat the better fighters and at times, looked better than Gonzalez has done, who in his own way, has looked just as good if not better at times.

The issue however is that RG is winning these titles in an era where there are between 4-6 so called "world" champions per division. Not to mention the fact that RG has not beaten anyone who could be considered an atg.

Lower divisions are such a joke. I still don't understand how they think it's ok to make divisions 3 lbs apart. Is it really that big of an accomplishment to win titles in 4 different divisions when they're just 12 lbs apart having 4 titles per divisions?

Heard this arguement repeated this week however by the time you beat a ATG they are typically peaking or reaching their prime as in Roy Jones beating James Tony or they are faded and past prime as in Kovalev vs. Hopkins and Mayweather Pacqiuao ; therefore to me beating the best in your division is better although its a honor to have these names but its just a hollow victory...maybe one day someone beats RG but by then he might not be who he is right now.
