Ward got every bit of the credit he deserved at the time of his biggest accomplishments. After beating Dawson (his last noteworthy fight), he was on the cusp of stardom, with there even being arguments that he should be ranked p4p #1. Everyone was on his side.

It's only because of his nonsense with Goossen, the long layoff because of that nonsense, and the subpar competition since that he again sees widespread criticism. If he beats Kovalev, most of that criticism will disappear and Ward will again be one of the darlings of the boxing world.

I think this is true. If he manages to beat Kovalev he will get the props he thinks he deserves. It will make up a lot for all his inactivity in the sport.

He doesn't deserve much credit for anything he has done in the last five years. He has had only 4 fights in the last 5 years against very average unknown or barely known boxers. He has twice fought 168 pound boxers after moving up to 175. What exactly does he think he deserves all this credit for? Winning a tournament 6 years ago? I think most fans do give him credit for fighting the top guy in Kovalev. He can't expect to get credit for beating Kovalev until he actually beats him in the ring.

Agreed, with the addition that he must beat Kovalev convincingly! It cannot be close or he will likely come out looking 'lucky'. But let's play devil's advocate and say he beats Kovalev convincingly, he must then continue to challenge himself with undisputed unification and contests against perceived threats out there, or multiple defenses. Otherwise, he falls right back into obscurity, losing belts one by one due to inactivity or defense of the belts.

Here we go, the excuses begin. Andre Ward has to beat one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world "convincingly" or its considered "lucky". Are you kidding me right now?

This fella hasn't had a relevant win since 2011. In five years, new fighters have emerged - simple as that.

He's 32 and is taking his first true challenge since Froch...so no notable wins/losses/challenges and now - he's probably losing a step I suspect.

He did it to himself. After Froch and even the Dawson KO - he was the MAN...then the last five years have elapsed.

Truth! For those who don't agree, ask yourself who would sell more PPVs: Crawford, Spence Jr., or Broner? It's just a reflection of our society. Who would sell more concert tickets John Legend or Jay-Z?

Golovkin is 34, he's refused to move up or fight a P4P fighter, embracing and excusing him is classic great white hope syndrome.

Andre Ward had 6 fights I believe at the beginning of his career at MW. It's not like he was a champion or even contender at MW. The vast majority of his career was at SMW. Only recently has he moved up, and that was because of his body forcing him to. Remember, he (or at least Hunter) said after the Smith fight that he had unfinished business at 168. I believe that a fighter should stay at whatever weight class he can comfortably make, until he truly cleans out his division by becoming undisputed champion.

Golovkin is no more a 'great white hope' than your namesake Canelo is. Neither are from America, neither speak the best English. So why am I guilty of something that you aren't? Why didn't you choose Wilder or Crawford as your name, like you asked me? Is the answer just maybe because you like the guy, regardless of pigmentation?

I dont think any of those fighters sells shiz for a PPV. Crawford v Postol put up ugly numbers. And comparing John Legend to an all time great rapper like Jay just isnt fair...
