I'm British and I think the same thing would have happened there given the same circumstances but offset by the fact that we are in a golden era for boxing in the UK which is not the case in the USA.
Lets say he would be Norwegian - well of course he would be a huge star - who else have they got to get behind [no intended offence to Norwegians, could have used Hungarian or Kazahkstani (ohh!)]
Don't buy it. If Andre Ward was British they would believe him when he said he had promotional issues instead of believing he was ducking Froch's leftovers (???)

It's only because of his nonsense with Goossen, the long layoff because of that nonsense, and the subpar competition since that he again sees widespread criticism. If he beats Kovalev, most of that criticism will disappear and Ward will again be one of the darlings of the boxing world.
      Totally agree.

He can't expect to live off former glories. Everyone knows he was an exceptional SMW fighter around 4-5 years ago. He's hardly fought in 4 years and when he has it's been poor opposition. If he wants that credit then he has to show how good he is against good opposition in the present. 4 or 5 years is a long time in boxing these days.

        Whining again huh?

You don't get any credit from me because you cheated your way to victory against my man Mikkel Kessler, sure you probably had beaten him anyway, but you didn't. You cheated and permanently damaged a true gentleman, because you were afraid of losing that you didn't even dare to fight your own game.

Had you done it, you'd be high up on my list of fighters I like. But I'll never forgive that one fight. I hope your carreer continues down the drain and that we'll always remember you as that one guy who could have.

Boxing is very what have you done for me lately and Ward has not done a lot lately. The reason never really matters for anyone in his position, he just needs to produce more good results.

Boxing does not get much mainstream coverage these days. If Ward wants more fans, accolades, credit, $, then start fighting in places other then Oakland. With all due respect to people who live in Oakland, the truth is more media would pay more attention to him if he had fought in places like NY, Staples-Stub Hub, or Vegas. There is only 1 athlete who gets any attention in Oakland, most A's and Raider's and Warriors before Steph are not on the national radar.

All of this ^^^^^^. After the Super 6 and then Dawson there was a huge debate going on as to who was really better between Ward and Floyd. But you can't coast on that for year after year and expect the same accolades by fighting either nobody (not always his fault) or cab drivers.

Ward was never hated until cowardly Golovkin refused to fight him.

At the time of his rise, the welterweight division was the hot division that everyone was talking about from 2008-2011. The divisions around WW also got attention as well. Super middleweight was getting covered mainly in Europe.

Following the Super Six he certainly got the credit from the boxing community that he wanted and then a year later went onto dominate Chad Dawson which further established him as a top fighter.

However he failed to capitalize during the 2013-2015 stretch, which was a very important stretch where HBO was desperately looking for another star after Pacquiao got KOed by Marquez and Floyd left the network.

Injuries and promotional issues allowed Golovkin to essentially steal his spotlight and become the household name for HBO.

Ward has been very jealous of Golovkin's success and has resorted to making snide comments, which turned off a lot of fans and media as well.
Golovkin is a household name? 97k.
