I think moving up to the 168lb weight division was a career saving move for James Toney. Ever since he defeated Michael Nunn for that 160lb title, his skills had appeared to have been on a decline and mostly against limited opposition. Perhaps it was due to a lack of proper nutrition and conditioning.

In addition, not only did he lose the Dave Tiberi bout, I strongly believed he lost the Reggie Johnson bout too. Once again he was granted yet another gift decision. If I can recall correctly, Reggie Johnson was the first man to have ever drop James Toney to the canvas in a professional prize fight.

But then on the flipside, they say that Toney was terribly drained against Roy Jones and that's why he was dominated

Then at 175 he lost to Griffin twice and Drake Thadzi for the same reason. Well, the excuse for the Griffin bouts are they were robberies when in reality neither were.

But I agree with you, Johnson beat Toney and made him look absolutely foolish for the whole fight. Not as clear as the Tiberi loss though.

9-3, 117-110, RJJ is the proper score.

James Toney has always being honest about the Tiberi fight, James was so inconsistent with his performances, but an all time great talent.

You are right because the same thing that hindered him at 160 hindered him at 168. The man had terrible eating and fitness habits. I even heard that he didn't like to do roadwork.

He would come into training camp weighing a minimum of 30 lbs or more. Therefore, in order for him to make fighting weight, he would have to make the cut by losing body water; Which makes a fighter weak.

As far as the Montell Griffin fights were concerned, I thought that Griffin clearly outworked and was the much busier of the two fighters in their first bout and won a close but clear decision.

The second fight was a lot closer than the first one as Toney was more active and a lot busier than the previous fight. I thought that Toney barely edge it out in the rematch but again that fight could have gone either way as well.

There is absolutely no way Toney won a round, let alone 3. I watched this fight two days ago. Roy easily won every round.
