I'm a GGG fan, But the Brook Fight is Pointless

I hate to even be posting this, honestly. I've followed Golovkin for a while now and I'm no fair weather fan. I'm a fan of him to the end. His style and aggression and ring skills are excellent and I believe he is one of the best right now.

However, this fight with Brook is a sure win. Anything is possible in boxing, but some things are highly improbable and this one of them. Golovkin will knock him out inside of 5 rounds IMO. If Brook pulls the upset, I will be more shocked than I've ever been from any boxing match ever.

Now, as a top dog, I agree with other posters who think he should move up. I want him to unify at middleweight. I think he can do both, fighting bigger guys at a higher risk to himself and his "0" and gaining the respect of boxing fans instead of fighting another guy that is an easy lock for him to win.

As a boxing fan, of Golovkin or anybody else, you have to stop and ask yourself what you like about boxing. For me, competitive matches where, going in, you can't pick a winner. Kovalev-Ward is one of these. Golovkin-Brook is the opposite end of the spectrum.

GGG is the man IMO, but he has to prove it against guys we aren't too sure he can beat. He can still realize his 10 pound unification dream as well. HIs star power is growing. But hey. If he went up and beat DeGale or Chavez Jr. or Jack, how much could his haters really complain? I know, the haters will hate no matter what, but he would solidify all of the fans like myself who believe in him if he were to do this. I mean, I want him to unify, but it's really a matter of time. I see him blazing through Eubank, Saunders, Jacobs and Canelo. I'm not even sure any of those fights would be competitive. That's how much I believe in him. I also believe he can move up and take out some of the best 168 pounders as well.

I've done threads bashing marinating and bashing mismatches before. I'd be some hypocrite if I went along with this. A few posters on here opened my eyes and I say GGG is great, but he needs to do a better job of proving it.

Yes, I was thinking the same today. The only thing he gets is exposure and brand awareness. The cost is criticism by people not following the sport or not being very smart to understand his context and how every MW is running from him.

Maybe after this fight he gets BJS. If not, then he might fight at 154 or 168. He has two good years left. I want him to retire with no regrets. You also have to consider that he fights three times a year. Not every top fighter does that.

Did you find Danny Jacobs username on here yet? You should send him a message and tell him to fight GGG

Exactly, man. I think he's the best. No use in wasting it. He can have a truly memorable career, but this won't help. Sure, he crushes their guy in England, but it's still another sure bet. I know he's been ducked but there has to be a better challenge out there for him. And I certainly hope he fights three times this year, against one of these scared middleweights or at 168 or hell, even Lara.

Integrity, that's what you did there my friend. A lot of Golovkin fans are saying "no thank you" on this one. After Canelo negotiations failed I was expecting (or at least hoping) something good would happen and we could once again be excited for Golovkin. They hyped up the idea of him taking scalps at 168 and things were looking good! So much potential, but his team is only after money. He'll be turning 35 with Martin Murrary as his best win. That was fine a couple years ago but he's hardly living up to the "God of War" nickname anymore.

Boxing is at a point where that river of cash looks like it might start drying up. The US networks are feeling the pinch. We need our best boxers to take it up a level and pursue the best fights in order to revitalize fan interest.

There's a difference between pointless and it not getting him any respect.
It's definitely not pointless. Brook is a name, it will be an exciting fight due to styles, and it will build up his image in the UK, which is quickly turning into boxing mecca.

But it wont get him much respect in the boxing circles.. unless Brook somehow shows up to the fight weighing 165 lbs and looking great.

                Hey, thanks a lot, man.

To be honest, I hope that river does dry up. Maybe then, we'll get some meaningful fights and the pretenders can either get beat down or leave the sport. I'm for GGG all the way and like you say, it sounds like his team is holding him back, but I'm tired of it. You can't be for mismatches just because your fighter in on the better end of it and then complain when somebody else who you won't like does the same thing. Golovkin vs. any 168 pounder is more interesting than his fights at middleweight, much less fighting a welterweight. I had my blinders on for a while, but I see it now. Thanks for clearing up the stance thing. I really had it in my head that he was a short, small middleweight but not so. Bring the real fights we want to see. No more mismatches for a guy who's had enough of them already.

I completely agree. As a Golovkin fan, I find this whole thing embarrassing. And not just him-- The entire middleweight division is a joke. Aside from Golovkin, its stacked with glorified undercard fighters who won't fight each other. And now Golovkin pulls this crap. He could have fought Lara.

Fuck him for pulling this shit.

Well anything's possible, but for me, when I first heard about it, I got excited because I thought 'Golovkin gets a name on his resume.' I wasn't excited because I thought it would be a good fight. I'm tired of the mismatches. GGG is the man. Just ready to see him prove it, which it seems will have to be at 168 since the cowards at his own weight won't step up. Not his fault, but it is the way it is. If he was 25 instead of 34, I wouldn't even say anything but we'll have to see I guess. But who knows? Maybe it will be somewhat competitive.
