I've always wondered why Canelo would have fought Cotto if he had no intention of fighting Golovkin. Golovkin was the mandatory then and it was part of the step aside that Golovkin get the winner. It also baffles me that Canelo would continue the charade for so long, even calling Gennady into the ring and challenging him at 160, only to vacate the title roughly 10 days later. Canelo had two opportunities in the ring to say exactly what Oscar is saying now, that Canelo isn't a MW. Instead, they paraded the belt and made macho statements Canelo had no intention of backing up.

My only guess is that Canelo and Co was expecting a little help from the WBC. My thought is that Canelo thought the WBC would let GGG mandatory status linger a bit longer, allowing the fight to "marinate" rather than cook. Instead, Sulaiman showed Alvarez that they dont F around in Mexico
