i've seen that video. k2 doesn't pay jacobs. they negotiate a purchase fo the fight by a netowrk [hbo or showtime,] and then negotiate a split of that revvie. or they put it on ppv. jacobs, clearly, wants ppv money, and he's alluding to giving the fight a year and a half to build to that point. he got a million and a half bucks agaisnt peter quillin. that fight absolutely bombed on showtime, and cost them money. HBO can't afford to pay him that much to fight golovkin, who commands more money by a huge stretch, given how poorly jacobs' fight with quillin did on showtime.

If K2 was offering Jacobs $1.5 mill (to be clear, divvying up the pie), then it's likely assumed they're using the same financial structure of a deal they used for Lemieux, which is a ppv model. They paid Lemieux extra b/c he had a separate title that they wanted. Jacobs doesn't. $1.5mill for Jacobs is generous to fair considering his Quillin fight bombed in his own backyard. Nor can K2 be faulted for offering more when the Lemieux ppv did little more than break even.

As for Jacobs' claim to want to build up his name more, his effort seems pretty lacking. 9 months inactivity and then taking an opponent for which there's no demand. He's been WBA 'regular' champion 2 years now, that's more than enough time. I'm unconvinced he has any intention of ever facing GGG and should be stripped of his title if he's still unwilling to fight make his mandatory fight after this September when they've both had their current fights conclude.

GGG should seriously consider moving up to 168. Arum and Ramirez will hype the fight, and May would be perfect! There's DeGale, Badou Jack, Chavez Jr., and Callum Smith available. Of course there are no mega-fights like Sergio Martinez, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, or Andre Ward, available for GGG. GGG should just ask himself: "What would Bernard Hopkins do?"

Well, you have to consider that B-Hop moved up after two straight losses to Jermain Taylor. He moved up for a big fight against Antonio Tarver, who was coming off his star-making KO of Roy Jones.

Is there a comparable, realistic scenario for GGG at 168 or 175? Oh wait, sorry, you answered that in your post.

There is this disingenuous myth floating around NSB that B-Hop jumped from 160 to 175 for a tomato can and pride. No...he did it for big money and exposure just like any other fighter. Risk/reward.

maybe im overstating it but every single top fighter the last 50 years moved up in weight usually multiple times even after age 30 to truly test themselves even after they found their comfortable weight. i cant think of any that stayed at one weight class their entire career just because they could they all moved up because staying at one class was too easy or they couldnt get anyone to fight them tho we all know 160 is a weak division.

I think Hagler fought all his title defenses at MW and retired as a MW. Of course it was different era but I recommend watching Hagler-Mugabi to get a sense of how a true champion accepts challenges from big threats. If you can't find it, you can PM me.

Some fighters do develop into bigger athletes as they mature. But I think most start out competing at typically two (modern) divisions below their natural fight weight; and they do this until their body refuses to cooperate. That's when they move up. I suspect in a few years Canelo will hit this wall. Meanwhile, Golovkin has taken the Hagler approach, avoiding large weight swings between fights, maintaining a stable range over the years.

No, he has 3x more belts than last year, prospects of a major ppv bout in the UK, tons more notoriety and exposure from exposing boxings biggest star as scared of him. That's a pretty productive year

Here's the funny part. To everyone whining that Golovkin missed his shot with Ward.. he didn't. Here's interest in each fighter from 2009-2016.

Ward was most popular during and after Super 6.. but even during those times he wasn't even as popular as Golovkin 2 years ago.

Considering at the time when Geale was Super he literally gave up the title rather than fight GGG, it was clear even then GGG was the top WBA fighter.

It's not like now where GGG is super and Jacobs is regular, but it's Jacobs who wants nothing to do with GGG using money excuse.

Jacobs knows if he beat GGG he'd be able to make big money, but he wants to wait GGG out.

Sure ain't a professional boxing promoter, but I know an irrational argument/strategy when I hear one:
Why are the two choices mutually exclusive?
Can't GGG continue on with his MW reign, serving as Canelo's (and anyone else's) gatekeeper to the top of the MW division.
At the same time, he could sit ringside at each of Canelo's fights, and just smile his way through the whole experience.
Maybe it's just me, but NOTHING charges a real fighter up more than an in-person, public shaming.
GGG literally has nothing to lose by giving Canelo the coward's treatment.

Canelo seems like a G, and I can't see him not putting the pressure on Oscar after he's had enough of that.
