  • Comments Thread For: Golovkin Focuses on Middleweight Legacy, Canelo in Rearview

For the first time in the past couple of years, Gennady Golovkin can look forward to a next fight without having to worry about chasing another name or title. Having been teased with the possibility of landing a fight with a big divisional draw only to be constantly stranded at the altar, the unbeaten and unified middleweight titlist can now focus squarely on his own legacy. No longer will his next assignment have to carry a sidebar of it leading to a potential fight with yet another top boxer unwilling to face him in the near future.

I hope it's true. The GGG/Canelo talk has become as annoying as the Pac/Floyds talk in the years preceding their fight. Would love for these two to mix it up at some point but, for the time being, would definitely like to see GGG develop his career without Canelo. Maybe take on Ramirez like Sanchez said they would.

Glad it's true. The whole mandatory drama from both sides ended with nothing. I don't hold it against Golovkin or K2 that Canelo fight did not happen, it was a risk worth taking.. but don't make the same mistake twice. Now he just needs to focus on getting good fights for the next year.

Something like Eubank in Sep, BJS in Dec and Ramirez in May would be my preference.

That's all you can do GGG clean out all willing MW take all belts then move up to SM. Don't beg Canelo like so many others used to wait around for Floyd to bless them with a fight he used to string people along

if canelo's really going to move to 154, golovkin should fight jacobs if it is truly a ppv [don't think it is, and the networks don't work together, but let's see if he's as popular as he thinks he is,] any of the elite 154 lbers moving up [andrade, big charlo, and lara,] or head to 168.

there's nothing left for him at 160 lbs once those fights are done. they were talking "unification" when it was a process that involved a fight withe the biggest draw in boxing. what's really left to do at 160 if that fight is no longer a possibility?

            – There has been a lot of talk about Gennady Golovkin, the unified middleweight champion, facing Chris Eubank Jr. in the UK, errrr…sorry, England and the original dates that were tossed around were Aug. 27 or Sept. 3. Well, a couple of sources have informed UCNLive.com that HBO is planning a split-site doubleheader on Sept. 10 that will have this fight and undefeated WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez facing WBC 115-pound champion Carlos Cuadras from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I asked one source about how HBO – which is supposedly going through more budget issues than the city of Detroit – can possibly afford this scenario. The answer was, “(HBO is) paying minimal to ‘GGG’ because it’s at 5 p.m. from England.”

With Canelo gone, all roads to MW glory now has to go through Golovkin. Not a bad position to be in. MW is after all boxings second most prestigious division.

Golovkin has a lot of defenses and impressive that they have all been stoppages. Note as well how none of his victims has been campaigning for a re-match and none of his defenses has been close. It's such a shame that none of the big names has had the courage to step into the ring with him. That's a cross Golovkin has had to bear for nearly a decade now.

Good position to take- don't beat the dead horse. I'd welcome not seeing any Golovkin vs. Canelo headlines or speculation for a long while.

You can only fight willing participants. So they need to go find some. Eubank Jr isn't a bad start.

Look at that picture. Canelo is not a middleweight? Please 155 can't make 160 ? But fight night 180 don't let him scam us PPV vs Liam Smith? Are you serious? Saunders , Jacobs at least
