Being a fan of boxing means understanding and to a certain extent understanding the business aspect of it. I'm not sure why there are so many emotional posts about something real fans should understand by now. Not sure why anyone is commenting negatively on what Mayweather the promoter has to say. He is a promoter now!

Golovkin Alvarez has ALWAYS been a business fight. It's not like Alvarez is the consensus best JMW fighting the best MW. There isn't even the big clash of styles theme that other big fights have had. It's a proposed fight that's popular because Alvarez was a MW champ for 3 days because Sergio Martinez and his destroyed knee cashed out against Cotto.

Canelo vs Lemieux would've been a great fight and it would've been the perfect preview to Canelo vs Golovkin. Why Canelo wants to hang out at 154 I don't know. Liam Smith seems like a good business move, with building up Canelo's profile in the UK, he could make a good chunk fighting Saunders next.

Canelo vs Golovkin is only going to build and build, they're trying to make it into another Mayweather/Pacquiao. That's why K2 is staying on such "great terms" with Golden Boy because they know the big cashout is coming, they just have to stay on track and be patient.

Or if Canelo stays at 154 and Kell Brook moves up to 154 that fight would do huge ppv numbers, on both sides of the pond.

I wonder if GB is doing much to promote Frankie Gomez at this time, I've heard nothing about him since he dominated Herrera. Gomez is good enough or close to being good enough to get some big fights with the top welterweights, especially if DLH looks out for his matchmaking like he does Canelo's. With the proper guidance Gomez could be another "cash cow" for Golden Boy. Just look what Top Rank has done with Brandon Rios.


Also I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they announce a Canelo/Floyd rematch, another potential mega fight.

Doing the fight now does make the most business sense.

1. Big fight
2. If Canelo loses, he won't be damaged. Name one fighter in history whose stock dropped tremendously (or at all) after one loss. Tyson being dominated and knocked out by a journeyman didn't affect his stock at all. He can easily recover from the loss.
3. Some of Canelo's star power would rub off on GGG and make him a bigger star with the win, and at 34, he doesn't have a long time left
4. You could always book a rematch a few years down the road if conditions fall right and make money off that
5. It's a better look for boxing all around because it shows the best will be pitted against the best almost right away, not years down the road

"Men talk, women talk, but numbers never lie!" There are a lot of people who hate Mayweather, but still paid for his fights. Same with Ali. If boxing fans want to apply pressure on Canelo, don't buy Canelo vs. Liam Smith! If Canelo can get a sold out venue in Las Vegas and 700K PPVs, why would he be in a rush to fight GGG? Canelo has plenty of talent to choose from @ 154 after Liam too! Andrade, Charlo twins, J-Rock, etc. This is why I thought GGG should have accepted the 155, and then forced Canelo to walk away from that. That would've damaged Canelo for good!

Ignoring the DQ loss...many people felt Roy Jones was on the road to ruin after Tarver sparked him.

Naseem Hamed DEFINITELY went down in marketability when Barrera beat him.

Broner went down SIGNIFICANTLY the moment Maidana landed that flush shot to the chin.

Pacquiao's PPV numbers took a huge dive starting from the moment he got put to sleep. At least he recovered; his numbers didn't.

Then of course, notable mention: Roberto Duran, "No Mas" certainly dropped his stock.

Four of the one-time biggest draws in boxing were never the same after losing. Tyson was still a draw, you're correct there. But that's because everyone knew him losing was Robin Givens fault, not that his opponent was any better than him.

The only fighter I can recollect kept the bulk of his draw power even in loss was Lennox Lewis, and that's because he always avenged said losses in exquisite fashion.
