It's called Latin America because that region was largely held by the Spanish and Portuguese. Hence, people from the Iberian peninsula as well as from former colonies of those nations are commonly referred to as Hispanic. Whereas people from the former colonies in the Americas are referred to as Latino because they're from Latin America.
