Maybe, he's apparently a small Sww. But let's see it, grab one of the 3 mando spots Lara. Rather see that mando than Tureano or Heiland

Canelo did not have to fight Lara either, but he did
This is not true. Hard fact is that at 160lb Lara is nobody - never boxed at that weight.

And the names on GGG Resume currently are mostly nobodies, sound like a match made in heaven

Beating Lara at 160 is not the same as beating him at 154. Again, this is blurring the disinction between name and quality. Lara has a name for being a quality fighter at 154, but you can't use his name to also say he's quality at 160 too. It doesn't work like that.

You could make the case if there was some solid reference as to the middleweight being much poorer in quality. We only use personal perspectives on here to judge that, mostly clouded by bias. The only tiny speck of evidence we have is Cotto vs drained Geale, but its not reliable because it was at 157. Theres definitely more recognisable names at 154, but it doesn't mean they are any better
There really isn't much difference between 154 an 160. And let's be honest, Lara's career at 154 is more than enough to say he would definitely be the best opponent Golovkin has ever fought. He has fought and been very successful against better competition than anyone at middleweight can claim to have fought. That a fighter like Vanes was considered a less than stellar fight for him says it all. Plus a quick 6 round KO over Lara would make Alvarez look really bad.

If Lara is really willing, Golovkin's people should be trying to make that fight instead of the Monroes and whoever the **** he just fought type fighters. They should at least make the effort when all these other fighter don't want to fight him.

          • Seriously, let's stop this nonsense about "Lara's never fought at middleweight," as if that means he would suddenly be a bum if he moved up 6 pounds. He is much better than the large majority of the division and would be a more prestigious win for Golovkin than almost everyone in the division.

Cheers for the info dude. I hope/think Saunders is in September - he commented he has a big fight for September, which corresponds to GGG aiming to fight 3 times this year (ie, September/December). Saunders has also been calling out Canelo as a coward a lot recently, so he may be billing it as his "I'll fight the monster at 160 even Canelo was scared of" fight, rather than just a cash out.

              • Lara might have a hard time getting GGG soon as it stands. GGG's priorities are probably #1 Canelo (biggest fight he can make) then Jacobs (mando) then Saunders (chance for undisputed) at the moment.

For the record, I'm not against a Lara fight. I don't think he would win but he's a great athlete and a great boxer so he's a worthwhille opponent.

Assuming all those fights fall through (and they probably will), he should at least try to fight Lara. Even if it can't happen for various reasons, at least make the effort. That is how Golovkin built the following he has, by going down the list of the best available opponents until someone said yes. In the last couple years that hasn't been true anymore, he's chased a single big fight and settled for crap when they fell through.

It wouldn't be hard if he grabbed any of the mando spots, would be a decent mando defense

Man I hope it's Saunders in September so the we can have an undisputed champion before the end of the year. I still have a feeling though that Jacobs will vacate rather than fight Golovkin. But there's no doubt Jacobs takes the fight if Saunders wins.
