Ali couldn't do that against Norton or the others when he was losing. If Marciano had the more limited power of Ali, he would have lost that fight!
Marciano did have great heart and a great chin and was smart enough to realize he was slipping a bit when he retired.

Ali was past his prime by the time he came back from his exile but still had enough to beat the top heavyweights of the time, which made him great, especially considering that the heavyweight division at that time is considered the best in history.

Don't get me wrong, Marciano was great but Ali was better IMO.

    • Ali was only 29 when he came back from his "exile". Joe Louis and Gene Tunney had many months of inactivity when they went overseas to war, but they never used it as an excuse when they returned. When Ali fought Liston, there wasn't a lot of heavyweight talent, but by the late 60s, there were several top heavyweights. He lost because Frazier was better than Liston, and because Norton was better than Patterson, not because of the months of inactivity.

Vitali Klitschko has been inactive now longer than Ali was, and hasn't been able to spar for much of that time due to injuries. He'll be eight years older than Ali was (37 not 29) when he returns.

He had to be very active because of his style, it was clear that his speed and reflexes weren't the same anymore when he came back, that made his accomplishments after his comeback even greater IMO.

At the time that Ali fought them, you're right, Norton was more in his prime that Patterson and Frazier was definitely more in his prime than Liston was.

Norton's style would always give a fighter like Ali problems, look at what he did with Holmes.

Ali took the fight with Frazier only 4 months after his fight with Bonavena, according to Dr. Pacheco, the body shots that Bonavena and Quarry gave him 2 months before hadn't healed fully by the time of the fight but I'm not making excuses for Ali, he lost to Frazier fair and square.

            • Rocky Marciano is the greatest white heavyweight of all time, Jack Dempsey is the runner up.

With that being said, today's great white heavyweights like The Klitschko's would demolish Marciano and Dempsey IMO...The Klitschko brothers are too big, strong, skilled and are capable of beating any heavyweight in history, black or white.

they are capable, however they also showed that they're capable of loosing as well. not hating just a fact.

and i do agree that both klitschkos acould beat marciano and dempsey and handfull of other good fighters. but that's only speculation, at one point people said that tyson was capable of beating any heavyweight in history. despite how his career had turned out, i still maintain that tyson had the potential of beating them all on his best night. that can be said of any fighter.

but it can also be said, that for every fighter out there, there's another fighter waiting to beat him. that's history of boxing evolution, and it cant be changed.

                • Rocky Marciano is the only Heavyweight Champion of the World, in the entire history of the sport, who is unbeaten.

Therefore, he must certainly be near the top.

                    • I would say Ivan Drago is the best white heavyweight of all times, this guy hit that thingee with something like 2000 pounds pressure, that is more than the aVERAGE heavyweight (700) and your typical pit bull`s bite (900).
