    Has Golovkin overplayed his hand?

I have to say I was surprised by Canelo vacating. Not that I thought he would actually fight Golovkin in September, but I did think GBP would try to pressure the WBC into another delay. I do believe Saul wants the fight, but I am also pretty sure DLH doesn’t, at least not in 2016.

So, with a second gifted title that didn’t require a single punch to be thrown for, what is next for Team G & Loeffler?

The obvious choices are Saunders and Jacobs, and in that order if you are a fight fan. But, it may not play out that way.

Saunders holds the lone major belt not in Gennady’s possession. This would seem to be the hands down next thing for him, unless you actually believe the fight with Canelo is still possible for this year.

I do not. I do not believe GBP will allow a fight in 2016 without a 155 lb catchweight, and I do not believe Golovkin will agree to that catchweigh under any circumstances. I also think that there will be some blowback on the part of GBP for putting them in the position of having to vacate, and that now they may very well avoid a fight (and the gift of a huge payday) with lil g for a few years.

    So, on to Saunders.

But, there are some things that may throw a wrench into the Saunders fight being made as well.

First and foremost, it is not likely to be a very lucrative match for Loeffler & Co. The only carrot here is the belt Golovkin doesn’t have. Yes, there is a scenario where it can do good box office, but that still doesn’t necessarily bode well for the bottom line.

That scenario is if the fight is held in Britain. But, holding it there (or anywhere else for that matter) is now going to cost Loeffler and Co a lot more than the 1.5 million Saunders is reported to have turned down previously. Billy Joe is reported to have been talking about a $6.5 million dollar payday, and this was before he became the lone belt not in Golovkin’s possession. Now that he is the last obstacle to “undisputed”, you can bet that the price has gone up.

And Saunders has options. A rematch with Eubank will do great in the UK. And do not be shocked if BJS is also on Canelo’s short list of opponents, especially if Saul plans to take fights to get ready for an eventual showdown with the Kazakh. And there are other folks who will take a shot at the WBA belt, if only to line up a shot with either Golovkin or Canelo, one or both of whom are certain to come calling for it.

    Then there is Jacobs.

In my opinion, this will be the next fight for Gennady. It is an easy fight to make now that Haymon fighters are back on HBO. And with Jacobs having accepted 1.5 to fight Quillin last year, he would seem to be the more economical option for Loeffler as well.

But, make no mistake, Jacobs is probably the much more dangerous fight. And, Jacobs is also the WBA mandatory for Golovkin if no Canelo fight is made. However, my guess is that since they have yet to get the huge payday from a Canelo fight, you may not see this one soon either.

My prediction? You will not see Golovkin fight either of the guys that logically make the most sense for him to fight in September. Nor will you see a fight with a guy like Lara. What you will most likely see is more of the same- him biding his time again while he waits for a huge payday fight to appear.

But, it may not be forthcoming anytime soon. He may just have to look upwards of 160 for that big fight after all.

He's got to fight soon. Father time wont wait on him. He may very well never get the big fight he's looking for.

I think Golovkin is finally in a great position.

He has made Canelo look like a bi**h which puts even more pressure on Canelo to take the fight soon.

I also don't think he will have a Wade-type opponent next. I think he will have a solid opponent from the group of Jacobs, Saunders, Eubank jr, or Lara...maybe even Ramirez.

What way was there to play this hand? GGG was avoided by the 2 MW champions previous to Canelo. He took a step aside to "marinate" this fight even more. He went to the Khan fight for a photo with him & Canelo in the ring. Canelo said he'd fight GGG at 160 that night. They had 15 days to make the fight. K2 said everything was moving along well. And then Canelo drops the belt before the 15 days & even up. What did GGG's side do wrong exactly? And has GBP or Canelo said anything since this all went down or are they still brainstorming on how to make this ***** ass move seem less ***** still?

K2 & GGG played this exactly how they should've. Its GBP's & Canelo's side that I think are overplaying their position & thinking they can run from a fight & not get blowback for it.

Golovkin didn't play any hand. He didn't make Alvarez vacate. And if the Alvarez fight doesn't happen he will HAVE to face either Jacobs or BJS or get stripped of his WBA title. Unless Jacobs and BJS both Vacate. So your thread has no point besides showing your obvious bias against Golovkin.

He never really got chance to play his hand, Canelo and his team didn't even turn up to the table.

Golovkin isn't really in a great position without Canelo though. Who else is there to fight that is going to create big interest for him? BJS, Jacobs etc. are good fighters but not fighters that can propel him to another level of stardom. Also amongst real boxing fans he isn't going to get a massive amount of credit for beating any of the other Middleweights. Even if he moved upto 168 and beat someone like DeGale or any of the champs, is anyone really going to say it's a great win and is it going to make him a bigger star? no not really.

I'm not even that sure Canelo could beat some others at 160, nevermind GGG but either way, at Middleweight and Super-Middleweight, the only fight that can do anything big for GGG's career now is Canelo. Beating any other fighter won't do a lot and his popularity will just plateau.

On the other hand, i don't see anyone else at 154 or 160 that does anything for Canelo's career right now other than GGG. So i don't think Canelo's position is as strong as they think. He will still do good numbers and now he's fought Cotto, there's nothing else around there that grabs people attention other than him fighting GGG. If they're trying to make him the new face of boxing, then he needs big events, simple as that and there's only 1 out there for him that people want right now. Most people see these situations in black and white and Canelo and his team can spin things any way they want in the media but most people right now just look at him as a guy that has ducked GGG. It just depends if they feel pressured by that to fight him. I doubt it, they seem rather shameless in avoiding this one.

Bjs doesn't want it. Jacobs announced a fight with a tba as soon as they said he'd be GGG's mandatory..literally the next day. Lara has another snoozer vs Vanes coming up.

If he doesn't fight Canelo he's ducking. Bottom line. Can't pass on Canelo, Ward, Froch, Chavez Jr, Lara, and Mora and expect people not to notice he's the common denominator in fights not being made. GGG isnt going to get the benefit of the doubt vs Ginger. He has too few fans and isnt doing enough to make fights with people calling him out in his weight ranges. Canelo's fans don't care about the belt... He's fought a better fighter than GGG and has always given us what we wanted. Aside from the few GGG fans no one cares that Canelo vacated..lets be honest.

Team GGG..bottom line needs to man the f uck up and call their bluff if they think Canelo is making it difficult. They never call...always fold. Just make a public statement like "GGG will fight at any weight above 155, canelo can come out second, be announced second..whatever gloves, first name on the promotion..just pay him his just due."

Wtf is Team GGG doing? Call it.

Caneo isnt just the cash cow..he's also the step up in competition. Make no mistake.. GGG is stepping up if he fights Canelo. Canelo isnt stepping up in competition.

Team GGG has ZERO leverage. ZERO.

Canelo can take the BjS fight from him...the jacobs fight too. GGG needs to man up and stop letting everybody fight each other while he collects belts and rejects the big fights.
