Almost The Man: But Big George Is Not A Top Five Heavyweight

Never assume that the title of ‘boxing historian’ makes a guy feel grand or superior. Only the insufferably smug and deluded feel like that. Trust me when I tell you that the one thing most of us dread is that bold new message in the inbox that opens with the quietly chilling words, “Hey, you’ll know the answer to this one….” [details]

    Strange.

One finds it rather strange that George is ranked behind Dempsy,Marciano, and Louis as far as punching power goes considering that he is so much bigger than those fighters. One would rather be hit by Louis than Foreman. Why those guys would be nothing but cruiserweights today!
    Later brother brologs.

its hard to compare foreman with marciano dempsey and louis because fighters were so much smaller in their era

but foreman certainly threw amatuerish punches that had real power, had he learned properly he could have been far greater than he was

Well, though the article is well written and has some good points, I find it hard to understand that the author describes Foreman as the ultimate exception, yet ranks his power based on the normal criterions.

And does it really make sense to compare the punching power of Jack Dempsey and George Foreman as there is a significant weight difference and both used different gloves?

The problem with rating Foreman in an All-Time list is that we usually take one fighter at his absolute peak. But Foreman had two careers and he wasn't the same fighter when he came back to fight in the 90's. If the George Foreman of the 70's had the knowledge, attitude and patience of the 90's version he would've possibly been unbeatable.

Your jokeing me right!!! Neither Jack Dempsy, Rocky Marciano, nor Joe Louis would have even come close to beating George especially Marciano (See Georges first fight with Joe Frazier if you want proof of this.)
Top 5 Heavyweight 1 Muhammed Ali 2 GEORGE FORMAN 3 Mike Tyson 4 Joe Frazier 5 Joe Louis

I almost took this person serious, until I saw him rate Tyson as the third best heavyweight of all-time.

It is impossible to read a Mike Casey article and NOT learn something. GREAT READ as always, very insightful, loved the aliteration and symbolism at the start, followed by the in depth analysis in the middle and end. If Mike Casey ever teaches a course in boxing history or writing...sign me up.

Personally, I rank George right at #10, behind Frazier. My main reason being his lack of staying power at the top and the overall quality of his defenses. While the wins over Frazier, Norton, and Moorer are impressive....they were the only significant Title wins of his careers. Also, it's tricky; but one must add and divide between his two careers, IMO. Maybe George deserves to be ranked higher; but, at the moment..he's at #10.

Once again, fantastic piece of literature.

LOL! That's right....Tyson should be rated where Liston is rated. They are both the same. Should Liston be placed at 12th all time then Tyson should be 11 or 13.
