From a self esteem perspective what a lot of people loose site of with Amir is that he values perseverance, hardworking effort and balls above all else. We could make a case that he's deluding himself in the latter because he refuses to fight Brook but he isn't as delusional as he gets painted on here.
Rather he doesn't buy into what is a primarily American value where only the outcome is accepted as the basis for self esteem. It hasn't affected his conception of self because he stepped up to the challenge and tried his best. That's what he values. Plus, despite how two judges had it he was outboxing Canelo. When he moves down in weight he can take that as a positive. He won't be fighting anyone as hard hitting again and he won't be draining himself as he did at those lower weights where he was stopped previously.
Now I don't buy into those last sentiments and here we can say that he's a little deluded but what fighter doesn't delude themselves?
Although it won't have much of an affect on his self esteem, at some point in the near future he could do with sitting down and thinking about the effect that being put out cold could have on him physically. If his punch resistance is to decline because of it then even clever matchmaking won't stop him from getting stopped again.
