I'm glad this thread has led to a greater appreciation of Cotto's performance that night. What's clear is that there are sides which see this fight going both ways, with a difference in margin, of course. Moreover, the majority agrees that something was seriously off with the judging that night.

For the rematch, I hope whatever led to those judges being off doesn't happen again. There wasn't enough of an uproar the first time around, but I feel a second occurrence would lead to a serious investigation.

No matter whom we root for, the least we deserve is a fair decision.

Just finished watching it in 5k and I still think Canelo won. Sorry papis, but our Cotto is a bum.

That was a very close fight. When you listened to the announcers it was like Canelo was landing every punch.

Cotto blocked a lot of punches but at the end I had Canelo clearly winning that close bout

That's exactly what I thought. Canelo was telegraphing his punches and roaring with each shot. You add that to the crowd knowing he's about to throw, and their own roar adds to the overall perception. By that point, it doesn't even matter if Cotto blocked it, because, if someone missed Cotto's George Foreman-style cover, they automatically assume Canelo must've landed something huge. If that weren't enough, then you also have the commentators yelling, "Wow, what a shot!" and not even realizing it didn't land.

After all of this, Cotto's just standing there like " what's everyone's fussing about?" and proceeds to land combos on Canelo. Finally, you hear the commentators wondering aloud why Cotto's not even reacting to the "bombs" Canelo's throwing, ultimately acknowledging that Cotto's either blocking them or not being moved by them at all, each time.

They had to resort to Twitter to make up their minds as to what was happening. That says it all.

I'll say it again that the way this fight was perceived had a lot more to do with the boxing world's ill-will toward Cotto, and Canelo's false promise of a GGG fight, than what actually happened in the ring.

I scored it just like the Mexican media did, a Cotto win by 117-111. Despite being a Cotto fan, I was actually watching for every shot landed by both and the effects--everything. Anything I wasn't sure about I replayed, over and over. Cotto was the better man, and yet somehow "experts" like the ESPN people, Dan Rafael being ringside, didn't realize it.

            What a shame -_-.

I mean think about in Vegas vs Floyd C.J. Ross scored the fight 114-114.

These terrible decisions have been happening frequently in Canelo's career. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a greater spotlight/investigation cast on them. I know Ross received a lot of backlash, but you'd think Golden Boy would get looked at by now, too. As Mayweather said, it seems like De la Hoya is always involved.

That was an outrage. I don't recall Canelo winning a single round against l
                    Floyd.

Miguel moved a lot, threw pitty-pat punches and landed very little in the way of meaningful punches.

Canelo, on the other hand, landed the meaningful punches, his defensive work and counters were excellent, he completely controlled the tempo and style of the fight...

Out of Lara, Trout and Cotto, the Cotto fight was clearly the easiest of the 3. It was no closer than 116-112.
Pretty much hit it right on the button.

                      Also:

                      • Canelo Alvarez outlanded Miguel Cotto 155-129 and had a higher connect percentage (32 percent to Cotto's 21 percent).

                      • Entering the fight, Alvarez was landing 49 percent of power punches, third-highest among active fighters. He landed 40 percent of power punches against Cotto (118-of-298). Cotto landed 75-of-255 for 29 percent.
