Bute was the biggest name in the weight class from 2009-2011. He was headlining HBO and Showtime cards. He was selling out the Bell Centre in Montreal and putting up huge gate numbers.

That was a money fight for Ward and he let Froch take the glory.

Then Froch offered Ward a rematch in England and Ward also declined that!

So we have a guy in Ward who keeps declining big opportunities in very winnable fights.
"biggest name" doesn't mean anything when you were yet to actually fight anyone worth fighting; getting sparked in his first fight against a known top player made that clear. Bute was, in essence Chavez Jr before he really became "Chavez Jr". Froch used the fight to firmly establish himself as the #2 super middleweight in the world, but there was no question that Ward was #1.

Beyond that, Froch "offering a rematch" for a fight that he clearly loss is rich; almost as silly as Pacquiao, after his victory over Timothy Bradley, going to the press with some nonsense about give Floyd another chance to fight him.

Andre Ward, with the move to HBO, was basically locked into a $2m minimum per fight deal (in addition to the money that he was getting from his career-long deal with Jordan brand and his other sponsors); Andre wasn't hurting for money.

If Froch truly wanted the chance at redemption for his loss, why not have the bag packed to fight Ward at Oracle? Ward-Froch II would be a sellable fight at Oracle Arena (Ward's own fanbase plus the Brits traveling with Froch likely pushes the Oracle Arena number past 15k, opening up the upper bowl for the first time), and it'd be sellable on HBO (could've booked Ward-Froch II for early 2013, due for about the time the Kelly Pavlik fight fell apart)

Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell were Showtime's horse in the tournament (though folks weren't sure how good he was, the belief was that Ward was a special fighter and the tournament was gonna prove that); between Kessler, Froch, Abraham, and Taylor, how many times did that foursome appear on Showtime before the tournament? gtfoh

So all those good wins years ago basically mean nothing today as far as drawing power.
Golovkin has been fighting C/B- level guys since getting hitched to HBO. If a "casual" couldn't tell you 2 guys that Ward beat, what do you think they'd say about Golovkin's friggin' resume?

Golovkin sold ~5k $30 tickets, and the current viewership numbers aren't even all that much beyond Ward's current number (openly ignoring the layoff); there's no need to overstate Golovkin's "profile".

When given the chance to give folks an idea of where his "profile" actually was, he flopped with a PPV that did 100k buys. Ignore that if you want.

Bute was considered the 2nd best guy at SMW and was an enormous draw in Canada. The reasons Ward gave not to fight Bute were ridiculous.
... Bute's immediate two fights, before the Super Six tournament (and his first foray onto premium TV in the US), were on Showtime so what the **** are you talking about?

Do you honestly believe that Showtime wouldn't have wanted the WBC, WBA, and IBF (old-school unified title) 168 belts to be in their 168 tournament? lol

The fact he might have fought on Showtime didn't mean he had an exclusive contract with Showtime. When he wasn't invited to the Super six he fought his other fights like the Andrade rematch and Miranda on HBO.

And it is a fact, not an opinion but a damn fact that Bute wasn't invited to the super six. A question that was asked constantly of Ken Hershman the creator of the super six tournament.

My guess is your dumb arse wasn't even a fan back then, and you're making up BS.

Exclusivity has nothing to do with anything; why would Showtime choose to air Bute's fights and not invite him to the tournament at his weight class? lol
