I'm talking about big fights. I don't care that he paid Paul Smith to show up because he couldn't find an opponent.

You can spin it any way you want, but the Bute fight would have been huge. Ward came up with a laughable excuse for not fighting him. That's a fight that Ward likely would have won and made a lot of money in the process, and he would have gotten the IBF belt. He tried to play hard ball and failed miserably.

The Golovkin situation parallels.

He also didn't entertain the idea of a rematch with Froch in England.

So what we have here is a guy who only wants to fight in US, which there is not problem with that, wants to fight in his home town and wants to be the A-Side in every fight and is unwilling to surrender anything to make big fights happen.

When you have a fighter that deluded it makes it almost impossible to make big fights.

Bute should've fought in the Super Six tournament with the rest of the guys; ignore that if you want.

The tournament should've been Kessler(WBA), Froch(WBC), Bute(IBF), Abraham(IBF 160 champ), Ward, and Dirrell; Kessler-Ward, Froch-Dirrell, and Bute-Abraham should've been Stage 1 of the tournament.

Money aside, rewarding Bute for ducking out on the tough matchups that everyone else had to go through didn't make sense to Ward, so he put his foot down; Bute traveled to England to fight Carl Froch and got obliterated in 5 rounds (showing about where his actual level was, after Froch's own level was measured against the other top fighters at the weight).

Yea he should've been in the Super Six but Ward had an opportunity to fight him after the tournament and he said no.

Bute was the biggest name in the weight class from 2009-2011. He was headlining HBO and Showtime cards. He was selling out the Bell Centre in Montreal and putting up huge gate numbers.

That was a money fight for Ward and he let Froch take the glory.

Then Froch offered Ward a rematch in England and Ward also declined that!

So we have a guy in Ward who keeps declining big opportunities in very winnable fights.

haha Ward thinks he's some kind of hall monitor. Everyone else in the Super 6 had to travel overseas, but Ward didnt have to. Maybe the other guys should have "put their foot down" too and refused to fight him

So it did those numbers going up against UFC ppv and NBA playoffs? Usually that's an excuse for why Showtime numbers are so poor. I'd love to see what the HBO free-views were, this show could've got anywhere from 2mill or more. Compare that to Spence/Algeri at 1.38k on NBC.

Exactly lol...the same dudes in here ragging on these numbers are all over the showtime/PBC numbers threads making 100 excuses about what else was on tv that night when boxing tanks in the ratings...

Boxing is a niche sport folks...Canelo,GGG are the biggest names in the sport to the casual fan now that Floyd and Manny are supposedly retired..

The fight doesn't need to marinate. Both sell tons of tickets and get viewers to tune in...put them together and you have a fight that sells well on PPV...
