      History lesson:

      September 19, 2004:

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 18 - It ended in a flash, an agonizing instant that Oscar De La Hoya will remember for the rest of his life.

Bernard Hopkins (45-2-1) crushed him with a paralyzing left hook to his liver, sending him to the mat with 1 minute 38 seconds left in the ninth round of their middleweight championship fight Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. De La Hoya crumpled as if in slow motion to his knees, his head resting on the mat, his breath suddenly gone, and he was counted out by the referee Kenny Bayless. For De La Hoya, it was the first time he had been knocked out in a celebrated 12-year pro career...

As Hopkins, 39, celebrated with a somersault and a leap onto the ropes, De La Hoya pounded the mat in frustration, knowing that he had lost the fight that he said would define his career...

The victory doubtless gave Hopkins the respect he believed the boxing establishment denied him despite 18 successful defenses of his middleweight titles...

The two men came into the fight looking trim and cut. De La Hoya weighed in at a trim 155, Hopkins a pound heavier, his lightest in 10 years. He said that he improved his speed, but kept his power.

Although De La Hoya was the challenger for Hopkins's three titles, De La Hoya held the leverage in negotiations for the bout. De La Hoya is guaranteed $25 million and Hopkins $9 million. If the pay-per-view purchases are above 1.5 million, De La Hoya could get $35 million, and Hopkins could nearly double his take, Arum said...

This is what champions do! They take titles, not wait until it's handed to them! GGG will suffer if he does not fight Canelo in 2016! There's not a lot out there for him. Canelo has all the time in the world!

I think team Canel erased all speculation the other day when Chepo said the fight will happen later. Get a new plan A. Saunders pulled out of his fight so that he can rematch Eubank. So unless you have Ģ5 mil to offer and willing to travel, you can forget that fight. And it would be an evening fight in the States so you can forget about PPV. He didn't mention Jacobs so I guess it's Ramirez. Ramirez just beat a hungry old lion who got schooled by Ward in his prime and ran and hid Germany. I guess he could ask the WBA to call the mandatory for Jacobs but that would make to much sense.

GGG/Canelo cannot be compared to BHop/Oscar.

There are several important differences between the 2 situations.

              1) The catchweight BHop agreed to was 158lbs. Canelo is trying to drag GGG down to 155.

              2) Oscar was a SWW fighting above his natural weight. BHop knew that he would be entering the ring significantly bigger and stronger than Dela Hoya, even after making 158. Canelo is naturally bigger than Golovkin. He enters the ring at 175+ after cutting to 155. Golovkin comes in at 169/170 after weighing in at 160.

              3) BHop wanted to unify the MW division. He would never have gotten Oscar into the ring to defend the WBO title without accepting a catchweight. Golovkin is the WBC interim champion and Canelo's mandatory challenger. That means he doesn't need to accept any conditions except those laid down by the WBC in order to either fight Canelo or be promoted to reigning champion if Canelo won't play ball.

              4) Canelo isn't getting any younger or lighter. If he won't fight GGG as champion, he's going to have to come back and fight him as a challenger sooner or later.

Is it really THAT hard to speculate? This is why K2 sucks ass with talking. I dog PBC for not talking to the media, but I think K2 needs to quit talking to the media. They don't do a very good job of it thats for sure.

This half a momo should be saying that he'd love to have GGG fight Canelo in September, but he thinks Canelo isn't Mexican enough to take on the best competitor he has who fights in a more classical Mexicanstyle than Canelo does. And blah blah & this & that, but this momo needs to work the hustle a lil bit. He also needs to slap GGG in the back of the head & tell him he needs to take the fight at 155. Its an asses in seats/PPV buy business. Its how the game works, but it pays off. Bhop had to fight ODLH at 157 for the 160 belt in the past cuz Oscar sold more seats than Bhop, but Bhop improved his legacy by doing so.

The million dollar question here is does this really matter to most fans? Look at all the hate GGG gets here. You don't think most people will think its fine that Canelo sidesteps this fight & this title (assuming the WBC strips him, which I still have doubts about happening despite the agreements made tbh)? I think most won't give a damn & I think most will dog GGG for not accepting the fight at 155 if anything. And then GGG gots the titles, but Canelo is still gonna be the #1 guy people consider is the best at 160 (ie 155). Hell I won't be surprised if the WBC gives Canelo some new belt if they do take his current one away thats how bs this whole WBC angle is to this whole thing to me.

If GGG KOs Ramirez and comes back to 160, Canelo won't hear the end of it from Mexican fans. Beating a high profile Mexican fighter, with the weight difference that creates some intrigue, is exactly what is needed to force Canelo's hand. Beating Sanders or Jacobs won't have the same effect.
Very well pointed. Beating a mexican fighter at his own weight would make some big noise and the mexican fans would put pressure on Canelo to fight GGG. The question is how GGG would do at 168 against a big 168 pounder in terms of power, speed, stamina etc ?
