Comments Thread For: Charles Martin: Referee Should Have Let Joshua Fight Continue!

Heavyweight contender Charles Martin (23-1-1, 21KOs) was not happy with the referee's stoppage on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London. Martin traveled over to the UK to make the first defense of his IBF world title against Olympic gold medal winner Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15KOs).

Martin was sat on the floor for 10 seconds daydreaming about what to buy with his £5m, then got up at 10 and pretended he wanted to continue.

You need to be up and ready to fight at 10 count. If you arent, its a KO.

Being on the way up on the 10 count is not good enough.

Why is this even up for debate? He was out of his depth and couldn't even move his head lol the basics of boxing and he failed. If the fight continued he would have been knocked out again as while Martin may be a great gym boxer, it was clear the occasion beat him, as well as Joshua being much superior.

Wait...did the ref stop it after Martin got up or did the ref count Martin out?

I didn't get the particulars yesterday I guess. I thought the ref counted Martin out as Martin made a late attempt at getting up? But this story seems to suggest the ref deemed Martin unfit to continue after he got up before 10.

If thats the case I'm with Martin. The ref should have let it continue. Having said that I don't think it'd have made a lick of difference with Martin's offensive effort, his defensive effort & Joshua's arsenal & confidence at that point in the fight so it doesn't really matter. Martin just got saved from taking some unnecessary shots to the head for a the same result (KO by 2) or similar result (maybe he makes it to the 3rd).

I agree with prince Charles, he got flash knockdowned

He was starting to time his left hook and the ref noticed so got him out of there

He was counted out. Ref got to 10 just as Martin started getting up.

At best Martin just mistimed the count, at worst he just wanted to quit in a way that would save him a little face

Well then you should have got up before the count of 10. He was a half second late getting up. Had he beat the count I'm sure the ref would have allowed him to get knocked down again. Martin didn't like what was happening, knew he had no chance therefore stayed down and tried to play it off. Point and period

I really hate when fighters try to pull the wool of the fan's eyes. Martin you quit plain and simple.
