Comments Thread For: Canelo Not Surprised That Conor McGregor Lost To Nate Diaz

To be fair, he did have a massive jump in weight and he was tagging Diaz up early on in the fight. That'd be like Pacquiao fighting Ward or Kovalev and they took the fight on short notice.
I think Diaz will crush him this time around though. You could just tell that his punches had much more of an effect on McGregor than the other way around.
he had NO jump in weight, what he had was the benefit of not having to drain himself 30 pounds, so he should have looked his best. He also had the benefit of fighting someone who had 4-5 days to train.Comment

Yup! And reason why UFC has a different champion every other week.A true boxing Champion will NEVER lose to a guy on 4-5 days worth of training.Comment

Fighting at 145 and then fighting at 170 is a 25lb jump, fact.
Nobody fights at their walking around weight, that's what they weigh when not training for a bout.Comment

Khan is fat at the moment.
He'll be about 165-168 on fight night, Canelo will be about 172.
Ultimately it won't matter, Canelo is going to win because he's the far better fighter. Being bigger is just another advantage he has.Comment

I recall Jones making a gradual climb up in weight. Its for sure impressive he was down at 147 at the beginning of his career & became a 200lb champion, but it didn't all happen at once is the thing or at least that I recall.
And Ishida made a even more nuts bump up in weight than Conor (40ish lbs, MW to HW), but he was fighting stumblebums, not legit world ranked guys, so that doesn't really mean as much.Comment

Mcgregor is about 5'7. Of course he gassed at 170lb's. Esspecially if he was gorging his face like he let on. Although I question an athlete who doesn't know that fighting too close to a meal isn't recommended.
Diaz is about 6 foot. He's got the structure to handle the weight alot better. Diaz apparently went to bed at 183 the night before the fight.Last edited by SplitSecond; 04-03-2016, 10:29 AM.Comment

Mayweather hadn't even had his first PPV at Conor's age. And I think Mayweather's first couple PPV's only did 300k. Conor already has a couple PPV numbers in the 1M+ range.
But don't get it twisted the UFC PPV model & UFC model in general is extremely different to how boxing works so McGregor for sure won't be the biggest star in MMA for a decade like you can be in boxing. The UFC throws out monthly PPV's where the entire show is the event, boxing only does them for big fights & its a top heavy thing more often than not. In the UFC the best fight the best in 8 divisions, in boxing the best rarely fight the best in 17 divisions. I love boxing more than MMA, but MMA is designed like the NFL or NBA. Only the best of the best will last for a decade+ at a high level & you can get kicked out of the machine if you don't perform. In boxing even some of the most promising guys are kept away from challenges for the first 2-4 years of their career & even after that "seasoning period" most guys aren't just thrown into the mix with the best of the best by their promoters or networks. So basically its a lil silly comparing certain aspects of combat sports that are so different. Weight is weight doe.Comment
