Comments Thread For: Gary Russell Misses 30-Day Weight Check, Hyland Fight in Doubt

It's been nearly a year since Gary Russell claimed the World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight title. He is now at risk of losing the belt without making a single defense. The 27-year old boxer from the greater Washington D.C. area is due to face Patrick Hyland on April 16 at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. However, he first needs to comply by the WBC's rules, which requires all participants submit to 30- and 7-day pre-fight safety weight checks, to ensure that boxers are not losing an abnormal amount of weight in a short period of time.

Good job Russell, might as well throw that title in the trash.

WTF, how does the champ miss weight? Wonder what the story is...bad weight cut, laziness or simply time to move up?

This is what Russell's old trainer was saying. The one he fired after Loma schooled him. He said Russell is lazy and hard headed and didn't want to work to get the weight off that all he wanted to do was sit in the sauna.

Gary Russell is a a hell of talent but takes a lot of opportunities that he has been given for granted.

Hopefully the fight still happens but I wouldn't be shocked if his belt gets vacated again.

Yeah his Old Trainer was clearly 100% Right about him. One of those guys who think he can just show up and win on talent alone without putting the work in. Sad to see a talent like this career just stuck in Neutral either because of Injuries or Weight

What the heck is going on with Gary Russell's career? Hasn't fought in over a year and now he can't even make weight for the 30-day check?

The guy has talent but he never seems to do anything with it.

I mean Idk why anyone is surprised. This guy fights like once a year, he hasnt defended his belt once yet, and is scheduled to fight some dude named Hyland from Ireland. I sense a huge lack of motivation. I understand its about the $ but to stay good at boxing you have to be active...

Does Gary Russell even care about boxing anymore?
