every time I watch the end of that Chavez-Taylor fight, it makes me really sad knowing how Taylor ended up as of today. Do I think Steele was in the wrong? Hard to tell. What I think, is that Don King told Steele pre-fight that he would kill him if he did anything unfair to Chavez. And what Steele did SEEMED unfair because of how close it was to the end of the fight, but the fact is, Meldrick didn't answer correctly after standing up and being asked two questions. Just say Steele had let him pass, that would be unfair to Chavez because he didn't answer the question.
yeah, I think Don King had something to do with it, it appears he let Steele know "Make it fair, or I'll have your ass" maybe he didn't even tell him this directly, but it was understood just dealing with Don. Maybe he gave Steele 25 grand just to be fair to Chavez. WHATEVER the case...I am positive Don King had something to do with it, even something as innocent as giving Steele a briefcase of money just to be fair to his fighter. Don is known for throwing money around.
Edited: I cannot believe Meldrick is fighting again this spring. Every time I hear him speak, it reminds me of that Chavez bout.
Jay Nady was on Jones's side against Ruiz. Whenever they became close (Jones and Ruiz) Nady was there.
That's bull**** buddy. Ruiz DOES hold way too much and DOES violate the rules. He SHOULDN'T be allowed to do the things he has done, and when he was made to fight by the rules he got his ass kicked. Nady is fair and he warned Jones for holding in that fight as well.
The most biased ref of all time was in the Zahir Raheem-Rocky Juarez fight...I think his name was Robert Gonzalez.

See, that's one of the reasons I admired Tyson back in the day. It wasn't because of his physique, his punching power, or the way everyone feared him. It was because the guy got so mad when someone would try to clinch with him. He'd get PISSED! come up with a sharp left hook in the clinch make his opponents think twice about doin that again..(holmes)
don't see where the controversy is on the stoppage either, the ref's not the time keeper so he didn't know how long was left and Taylor wasn't responding to him.
It was a HUGE controversy...are you insane, man? There was a red light right behind Meldrick Taylor as he was being counted and Steele is supposed to see that flashing light which tells him there are less than 10 seconds remaining in the fight.
Also, Taylor WAS looking at Steele then Taylor's cornerman jumped on the rope, distracting Taylor just as he was being asked if he was ok. It was obvious that Taylor had turned his head due to someone jumping on the rope but Steele immediately stopped the fight.
A piss poor decision or a clear bias, however you wanna look at it, Meldrick Taylor got robbed.
Robin Reid vs. Sven Ottke (Reid's bamboozled expression when the ref actually warned him for hitting his opponent was priceless - most biased ref of all time)
Williams vs. Tyson
Lewis vs. Tyson
u got that right and I'm happy u mention it, it was outrageous I was rooting so much for reid to KO this so called champion!
also reid was screwed a 2nd time by the judges (as almost always in germany)

No I'm not insane man, I just didn't notice the red light or know that there was that system in place. Has Steele ever answered the question as to whether he saw it or not?
Like I said, I couldn't give a **** who won and am totally impartial. Taylor was asked if he was ok before he looked away and then again as he looked away. The guy was totally out of it. He did deserve to win the fight though.
I apologize. I do not know Steele's comments about the red-light, but looking at the tape it seems he doesn't notice it, but it's his job to. About the fight in general he always says he doesn't regret stopping it and that he will stop a fight with one second left if he feels a fighter cannot continue, which makes no damn sense.

No problem. If he did see it he should have let it go, there wasn't enough time for him to take any more punishment. If he didn't then he did the right thing. I saw no bias from him during the fight though, he would have warned Taylor for all the hip punches otherwise.

it does if you think about it if a fighter has time to lay one more punch on his opoopenet then that could lead to disaster if he was out of it.
theres enough tragedies in the sport already referee's job is plain and clear he must protect the fighters in the ring. Steele did the right thing in my view.
