Why does Canelo hold onto the MW belt?

It seems like the belt brings him more problems than what it's worth. He claims he's not a true MW and he even said before the Cotto fight he didn't care if the fight was for the belt or not. Why not just drop it? It'll save him money and questions about GGG which you can tell is starting to annoy him. The questions about being a MW but fighting at 155 is also starting to annoy him. The MW belt doesn't help sell the Khan fight. The numbers would be the same with or without the belt. He put 30k ppl in a baseball stadium and 2 mil views without a belt. He's already established so how does it help him by holding onto the belt?

In cotto-martinez,cotto-geale,cotto-canelo,and now canelo -Khan,the wbc middlweight belt has been treated like a glorified bartering chip. It helps fighters get leverage in negotiations, and thusly be able to make demands such as catchweights and larger purse splits. Canelo will hold onto it as long as possible, because it gives him some sense of control over the division, even though he himslef claims not to be a Middleweight.

This fight could've occurred at 154 like Khan wanted and the fight wouldn't sell any more or less with or without the belt. Before the fight was announced I was wondering what middleweight could he fight at 155. No middleweights are going to 155 that's why he pulled Khan up. Canelo keeps insisting he's not a middleweight but as long as he has they belt he's going to continue getting pressure to fight GGG or any middleweight.

I'm sure the prestige of being the lineal middleweight champion is difficult to forfeit. You're right tho, the belt does seem to be doing more harm than good so far. Canelo would sell with or without a belt at this point so maybe its best for them to give it up and let Canelo adapt to the weight if they really have no intentions on defending against GGG. Ndam or Rosado would be a good opponent for a 160 debut.

Canelo isn't necessarily holding on to the belt, in a way the belt is holding on to him.

Did you see sleazy Sulaiman give Canelo that WBC timepiece to "honor" the champion. WBC is trying to grease up and bribe Canelo with these small displays of "loyalty" so that they create a good "relationship" and ensure that sanctioning fees are paid. As soon as Cotto didn't pay the 300k sanctioning fees they stripped him. As soon as Floyd didn't pay the WBO sanctioning fee they stripped him.

For the time being Canelo is young enough to still value titles but sooner or later he'll realize the title is just a parasitic illusion trying to leech him of some wealth. Or maybe he won't, truth is Canelo has always been a bit of a "belt whore" so to speak, he loves having title recognition of some sort.

It is good for negotiations. Fighters also like to be the champ and other fighters covet it. Unless you really have to drop it most don't

Yea for some fighters. But Canelo filled up a baseball stadium against Krikland and neither one had a title.

The belt holder has a say in how things are played out when negotiating contracts and brings more sponsors. And the reigning <----- those three words by the announcer at the start of a fight also plays a big part in a fighter's rep. and psyche.
