What does Mayweather represent for Conor McGregor? Boxing, no doubt. And possibly a lameness, a slick ability to avoid real fighting. Mayweather is an elusive, defensively oriented, wussy careerist who doesn't hurt a flea. Moreover, he probably retired early to avoid facing some fighters (guys with superior reach like Margarito and Paul Williams.)

The spirit of combat should end in a butt kicking -- for sure. I see this point. But I think Mayweather's skills should be admired anyway.

Conor doesn't care about a retired old man.
If you watched the press conference, you'd know that the only reason Mayweather was mentioned is bc some douche in press row asked Conor if he thought his likeness would grace the side of the MGM Grand Casino in a 30 story poster a la Mayweather.
Conor replied by saying of course he would--esp once the new arena opens.
Simple.
Conor didn't "lash out at Mayweather".
