  • Comments Thread For: Hearn Admits Making Joshua-Martin Was a 'Difficult Decision'

Eddie Hearn has admitted that Anthony Joshua has taken a big gamble as well as a step up after agreeing to challenge Charles Martin for the IBF heavyweight title at London’s O2 Arena on April 9. The fight was announced on Sunday and the 26-year-old was immediately installed as a 7-1 favourite by the bookies.

He's still very much at a learning stage, should he win this fight it opens up quite a dilemma.

He'd be a target for more accomplished fighters that he perhaps hasn't had the experience to hang with and should he defend against the level of opposition that's suited to the point he's at in his learning curve, he could initially come in for some heavy criticism.

its not ideal but nor is it an opportunity that can be passed up.

or just milk that belt and defend it only to bums, that's how it goes

Spot on , just my thoughts , Martin is big, strong, heavy handed and awkward, unbeaten and reminds me of a raw Riddock Bowe ...I see AJ as favourite but 1/7 on is far too rich.
It's one I will get to see.

Martin might be worth a sneaky Ł50 @5/1.....good fight.

he might get one easy voluntary but it looks like parker-takam will be mandated by the IBF soon, so he's pretty much guaranteed at least one other high risk fight within the next 12 months if he wins the title. whyte, martin, parker - can't argue with that run, really, even if there's a weak-ish voluntary also squeezed in

although, being now a PPV headliner, even his voluntaries will likely have names. i'd expect a brit like haye, price or chisora, or someone known in america like stiverne or jennings to be top of hearn's list

It has come early, especially considering AJ only had a short amateur career before he won Olympic gold then turned pro.

It's definitely a winnable fight for him though, and he can make a fortune unifying against Fury in the UK if he pulls it off.

That match-up would be like Froch/Groves 2 but with world-wide interest on top of the domestic dosh.
