But nelo is a 160 champ? GGG isn't a super middleweight! He isn't ready for 168 simply cos therer are middleweights like nelo to beat!
And Floyd was a "154" champ who defended his belt for 2 years at 147 pound limit. Floyd, Canelo, Manny, Cotto all bigger then any belt. Canelo simply won a belt at 160 because Cotto won it at catchweight and insisted on keeping it merely for negotiations purpose when he fought Canelo at catchweight. Canelo is not a full middleweight and has yet to fight a full middleweight and has NEVER called out any middleweights or said he intends to fight at 160 anytime soon. The highest he's fought is 1 pound over JM. If GGG wants to fight Canelo it will be at a catchweight. The belt means very little and even GGG knows this because he has taken numerous step asides for years and years to try and get a fight with bigger named fighters because that's more important to him then the actual belt. He knows if he gets the belt by vacate it does NOTHING for him. And Canelo knows he can trash this belt or let these organizations bend themselves like a pretzel for as long as they can to keep it from getting trashed. That's the politics side of it. Canelo doesn't need GGG or that belt he can fight numerous fighters and make big money and he already has a resume far superior to that of GGG. He's already fought 10 world champs, numerous p4p ranked fighters, numerous Hall of Famers and is only 25. GGG has faced not even half the amount of world champs, 0 p4p fighters and 0 hall of famers and is 34 years old.
GGG painted himself in the corner where nobody will feel bad for him by himself enforcing catchweights on others and for saying he could easily make 154 and calling out fighters. If he can't get big fights at 160 HE HAS TO MOVE or SHUT THE HELL UP and stop calling out fighters at different weights. When Canelo is willing to move to 160 and start fighting 160lb fighters then he can fight him. Otherwise you fight him now it will be a catchweight or no fight and he can continue making peanuts and explaining to his fans why he still hasn't fought anybody worth a damn and why he is on record saying he is willing to fight at 154 or 168 to get big fights but when the time comes he refuses to do either. Explain to fans why the best fighters during his reign were at 154 and 168 and he chose to fight in the JV 160 division while making false promises of going to 154 or 168. Simply put GGG has ZERO leverage over Canelo.
I don't think he's making $3M-$4M a fight. And unifying won't grow his fanbase. Fans care about names, not belts. And regardless, I doubt very seriosly that whomever is financing his purses will continue to do so at the current rate with him fighting the caliber of opponents he's fighting.
He just made 3 something against lemieux... His purse just going to get bigger with or without the canelo fight if he unify the division. Yes belts do matter. They normally represent who the boxer to beat is.
Yes if Khan is getting 8 million there's no way ggg is getting less than that.
Interestingly, I don't think that this comes down to money for GGG.
He'll get the recognition as undisputed middleweight champion if Canelo doesn't work out the details to defend the title.
From there GGG can work on a Jacobs fight or go in another less lucrative but still respectable direction, all while waiting for Canelo to finally move up to 160, which seems inevitable for a guy in his mid 20's.
Canelo's eventual move to 160 alongside GGG just getting deeper into his 30's I think is the thing really at play here.
If they don't fight in the fall, it could be a Floyd/Manny worst case scenario where we get the fight 6 years too late to know who the better man really was at the height of their powers.
I don't think Canelo has anywhere near the same aversion to risk as Floyd though, if at all. I don't even think it's him personally demanding the catch weight, just negotiating hardball. GBP can't make this too easy for GGG or K2, Alvarez is the golden goose.
Saul is caught is a nightmare weight web. He's a 154 pounder in a game where the money sits at 147, 160 and 175. He get's lightweight's to bulk up or he takes on the old and the restless. The gravy train ends with GGG.
Canelo is the cash cow just like Floyd before him. That means EVERYONE within 10 pounds of you will come to you. You people kill me with this Canelo is in trouble crap. You fools said Canelo has to fight GGG because he won't get a big money fight in May he will be stuck fighting Rosado. How did that work out? I said then and I'll say it again now. Canelo will NEVER have a shortage of people trying to fight him. He is where the money is they will all gravitate to him. Same with Floyd, same with Oscar before ect. Floyd had guys like Canelo willing to go down to catchweights to fight him. Had little guys like Marquez willing to leap frog weight classes to fight him at a catch weight and then days before made him go up a few more pounds just because he could. Manny fought guys from so many weight classes all willing to agree to jump up or down in weight just to get that fight. Canelo sitting at 155 allows him to pick and choose what's the best fight for him and they will come to him. Canelo has no need to move to 160 until he has to and GGG and his fans crying about it won't change that fact. If you want to fight him now it will be at his weight. If not there will be tons of fighters like Khan who are willing to fight at his weight that he can fight and make big money doing so.
It's ridiculous that they would be considering fighting for a 160 lb belt at any weight besides 160?
Really? Manny made a career out of it. Floyd for 2 years straight defended his 154 belt strictly at 147 and won the belt in the first place at a catchweight he enforced at 152. Hopkins defended his belt and lineal title at a catchweight under 160 to Oscar. Sergio defended his lineal title and belt at catchweight under 160 to Cotto. None of this is new.

that was a ppv fight that flopped , his purses aren't going to get bigger if he continues as a network fighter, 2 mill will be his average for non-ppv fights...
he needs to be a ppv fighter for the big purses, and he needs canelo to achieve that...
canelo fought Angulo on ppv and made close to 10 mil, that's how much of a difference it is...
