Comments Thread For: Froch, After Brutal Roy Jones KO, Calls For Age Limit on Boxing
Former super middleweight champion Carl Froch, who retired last year, has called for an age limit on boxing after watching last December's brutal knockout of Roy Jones Jr.
There should be no age limit, but these boxing commissions really need stricter policies when it comes to evaluating if fighters are fit to be in the ring.
I think it should not be that black and white. More like a case by case basis, every individual should be assessed carefully. For example, where do you cut off Hopkins career? At 46 he became The Ring LHW champion for the second time of his career, and won the WBC title, and hadn't suffered any stoppages yet(and still hasn't). On the otherhand at 46, Roy Jones got knocked out brutally by Enzo and that was his 5th KO loss. So do you take away all fighters rights to boxing even though they are one of the best fighters in their weight class and don't go around suffering stoppages left and right?
Also, it's up to doctors as well. Doctors clear old ass fighters, who have been knocked out already and are too old, and deem them good to go for a boxing match. The doctors are just doing their job, they can't tell a fighter he can't box anymore when they are perfectly healthy. But the thing is that doctor can not determine things like a boxers agility, reflexes, punch resistance. Machines can't tell you that, the human eye can, while watching the fighter in the ring.

What Froch said makes a lot of sense but I also agree with what you said here.
I see his point but things are just not that easy to determine. It is not just an age factor it is a level of punishment a person has taken. Some fighters by age 28-30 are already slurring words and getting KOed left and right. Some at 40-42 are moving around the ring like cats and whipping guys asses 15 years younger than them. It is just so relative its hard to govern. I feel really bad for guys like Evander and RJJ, especially RJJ. Some of the younger people on here may not know but he was a god almost in boxing back in the 90's. He was so dominant and his physical abilities were just unbelievable, it was amazing to watch. It is so sad seeing him now being knocked out. However it cannot just be based on age, I mean hell Floyd is 40 this year and can still beat basically anyone in the world at 147-154. Wlad is 40 this year as well and can still beat probably 99% of the hvwts in the world.
Age is not the critical factor here it is punishment taken and the toll on the body and mind. It is a very hard thing to fix unfortunately.

Should we be watching a 45 year old get his brain rattled around in his skull?
It's bad enough for young fighters. I'm happy not to see any 45 year old plus fight.
