I hope Barrera beats Ward and puts an end to that bandwagon.

These guys been boxing all of their damn Lives, no way 2-3 years off is going to somehow make them forget how to fight. If anything he has a huge advantage over potential opponents because during that Layoff he been able to scout and study them since he calls fights for HBO
Skills erode if a fighter is inactive for too long. Timing is lost. It all falls under the general umbrella of "ring rust." Of course, a top fighter doesn't forget how to fight; but at higher levels, inactivity can cost him. You never forget how to ride a bike; but given enough time, you simply cannot expect to pull off the same tricks you used to until you get in enough practice. That goes for everything in life.

it would suck for kovalev if Barrera beat ward. No point of fighting ward after losing to barrera. I have a feeling ward would prefer to lost to barrera than kovalev

Yeah of course but 2-3 years is not long enough to "Erode Boxing Skills" in a guy who is still fairly young and who haven't taken any serious punishment in this sport

Given Ward's inactivity and the rise to a new weight class there are some questions about him.

Barrera is big, strong, and skilled. He will put Andre to the test so we are going to get some answers to those questions one way or the other.

Ring rust won't be an issue

The reality is if you had a great training camp ring rust shouldn't be an issue. Mayweather, Hopkins, Pac, Marquez etc. The greats and I believe Ward is a great don't show ring rust because they put in such work and fight high level people in camp you don't see it on fight night.
