This is a tough test for Ward. Hes the smaller man, in a new weight class against a guy who's been fighting at the world level as an amateur for like last decade in a half. This will definitely show us what Ward is working with in his return.

I think it will be a competitive fight early on but Ward's close range game and experience will be too much for Barrera to overcome. Barrera is tall and rangy, offensive minded, decent power, commits to the body and seems to be a good finisher. It's hard to tell how good he really is though given his level of opposition. I'm going off his 17 pro fights and his amateur background. I know he beat Dawson and a few other names.

According to Luis Molina, the manager of Barrera, a deal is practically wrapped up to face Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) on March 26 in Oakland, as the main event of an HBO card.

I agree that it is likely the best time to fight Ward.

Like Judah said during an interview when he was asked why Golovkin was willing to fight Froch/Chavez at 168 but not Ward..... " you don't want to fight Ward when he is 100% ".

Good call, it is a good opportunity for Barrera.

Best of luck to both guys.

Have to agree. This fight is interesting to me from both fighters' perspective. I want to see what Barerra's got against a P4P fighter (although somewhat compromised), and what Andre looks like moving up after a fairly long absence.

The truth is, we don't really know how dangerous this fight is for Ward, because we don't know what shape Ward is in after all these years inactive, nor do we know how good Barrera truly is.

At least Ward is fighting a guy his own size and length. Instead of aiming for a small MW.

This could go a long way towards putting Ward back on the map.

Well, all the more reason for the fight to not get signed. Ward vs Pudwill @ 175 anyone?

Questions on Both Sides makes this fight OK for me

Ward vulnerable because it is his first fight at 175 officially while Barrera is a talented fighter but he is untested as a pro

Ward fought in June 2015 and looked as sharp if not sharper than he did before the Layoff. Fighters don't lose skills because of Layoffs. I would think activity and Punishment is what diminishes a fighter over the years.

These guys been boxing all of their damn Lives, no way 2-3 years off is going to somehow make them forget how to fight. If anything he has a huge advantage over potential opponents because during that Layoff he been able to scout and study them since he calls fights for HBO

You gonna see when a guy is a genius it doesn't harm inactivit, Barrera is no joke like I said on another post, but Ward will be climbing this year to his real spot, after he gets done with Kovalev, 2016 - P4P No. 1 - Andre Ward
