Now posters like you come out and just about straight out say Hopkins was a bum. Didn't you say that? You admitted you were dismissing Hopkins. How come it was a unification fight?
Kovalev was in a no win situation that fight. Yeah, Hopkins is probably no worse than the 3rd best light heavyweight in the game. But, he's in his 50s. Personally, I think Kovalev's supporters put too much stock in the win. And I think his critics put too little. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.

**** off lad. No way will I ever believe a black man was supporting another black man in some endeavour. That's not something you see every day.

His last fight showed that he still has the skill, but we won't know if he can still deal with pressure until we see him with top opposition again.

It was a close fight at the time, but the longer Ward stayed out of the ring doing nothing, the more one-sided and one-handed it became.

Kovalev is not in Ward's league talent wise or other

Ward is superior in boxing skills to the caveman type crude Kovalev. Ward would administer a boxing lesson to the awkward still developing caveman styled Kovie.
Kovie would be made to look clumsy and slow much like how Hopkins made Pavlik look in ruining Pavlik's career. Ward doesn't fight much and Ward is mismanaged but Ward whips Kovalev on an easy decision. Bet it.,

I truly believe Andre Ward doesn't like to fight anymore. Because of his skills and status, he makes a ton of money within the sport (when he does fight), but otherwise he wouldn't be a boxer anymore.

If that's true, then you have to wonder about his heart & will in a grueling tough fight with someone like Kovalev. I absolutely believe Kovalev's boxing ability is atleast a level above Kessler & Froch and his power will be something Ward has never seen. I have serious doubts Ward ends up taking this fight. He may take 1 or 2 more fights and say he doesn't have the passion anymore and just walk away w/o fighting Kovalev.

I think you are close. Of course Hopkins at 50 wasn't the same as he was at 47 or 44 or 35 years old. But as he proved by winning and defending a LHW belt in his late 40s, he was no slouch either, he was still very good.

Some people here trying to diminish Ward's win over Froch - that is equally dumb. Froch wasn't elite but he was bloody good. Ward has very solid wins but has not defeated an elite fighter. Kovalev is in a similar situation as BHop was no longer elite in his late 40s and Pascal although not shot is a lesser version than he was at his peak.

Froch, Kessler and Abraham are not and never were elite - but admittedly better than GGG's opponents so far. I have them as B+ level fighters.

Geale and Murray were at best B- fighters when Golovkin fought them.

Estrada is elite or close to elite. Gonzalez' win over him is more impressive than any one fighter on Ward's resume.

That is my take too. Otherwise why the reluctance to even fight a top 15 light heavy?

                    Comfort kills spirit.

Was it Froch who said it is difficult to get up for a dawn run when you have to slip out of your silk pyjamas - or words to that effect.

I see Ward getting hit way more than he wants to be in his last tune up fight (if it is against Barrera/Gonzalez or similar level) - and if he can't make 168 anymore where will that leave him?

On the other hand I hope I am wrong and he fights Kovalev.

I'm telling this since Ward won the Super Six was left to his "talents" in fighting matters.
